Hi,

I'm in the market for a new desktop pc. Looking to spend +/- R12k.

I will be using it primarily for gaming (sometimes online) and some amateur video editing.

Q1. What hardware specs shoud I be looking for? Pls be specific. I do not require a pretty looking pc, all I want is a box with as much raw power I can get and a 17" (maybe 19) flat screen.

Q2. Which suppliers in Gauteng area will give me the best deal (price and aftersale service) for the above spec?

Thanks

For R12k you can get a monster pc, the AMD's prices have dropped considerably.

Go to a local pc shop, any shop, don't tell them you want to spend R12k, just tell them you need a AMD AM2 Dual Core pc.

I'm not sure about the cpu's, but I know you can get a faaaaaasssssttttt cpu and at least 2GB RAM plus a 19" flat screen monitor, 200GB SATA hdd, a Geforce 7600GT and a cool case with a big psu.

Be specific, search the threads for AMD cpu's. Most people would tell you to go for some Core Duo chip, but the AMD's perform well to extremely well and they're cheap.

Just tell the pc shop what you need, much like the above, ask for a quote and come back here, tell us the price. If it's close to R12K you've been scammed. :)

After comparing prices of components from Matrix, Intercomputers, DigitalPlanet and others, Cyberdyne beats the rest most of the time. They move a lot of equipment and provide really professional service. I took a Dell pc for a memory upgrade (silly Rambus...) and they fitted and tested the memory, explained the future upgrade path and opened the case again after it came through dispatch to show me the memory is still in the box. And no, I don't work for them :)

For R12K you should be able to get the following:

Intel E6600 (2.4Ghz)
Intel 975x "Bad Axe" Motherboard
2Gb DDR2 667Mhz
250Gb SATA2 Hdd
DVD-RW
Nvidia 6600Gt
19" LCD Screen

one wonders if a 4400+ dual core amd cpu would be better with a 7900gt and not a 6600gt?

dont buy 1 250 gig hdd
buy 2 120 gig hdd's and set them in raid 0

i think i would rather have a fast gpu than a fast cpu for gaming

just a thought

Don't be fooled by appearances, download the pricelist and compare, visit their warehouse and swallow your words...
Yep: good stock availability, well priced and service that is quite astounding in SA. They're also the only place I've never had a problem with warranty swapouts before.

Quite true, a faster GPU helps more than a fast cpu.
just not sure what the price difference is on the 2 graphics cards. if theirs spare cash, spend it on a better GPU, but the 6600gt is a very good card for its price.

120gb are over priced, rather get 2x 250gb then.(or 320gb) (running Raid 0 you'll need a WinXP SP2 Cd)

PS. The Intel E6600 + mobo combo is cheeper that the AMD combo's :D

be a shame to put a 6600GT on that system - 7900GT or you're wasting your money

ya fully

120 gb aint over priced works out a little more expensive to run 2 120 gig but the performance gain more than makes up for it

6600gt used to be a good card

now its either a 7600gt or 7900gt

i doubt that a e6600 + mobo will be cheaper than an amd 3800+ dual core and decent 800 buck asus board

but i dont know because i have not seen pricing

Here's some rough estimates for ya:

AMD 4400+, R2,200
NForce4 SLI motherboard, R1,500
2x1Gb DDR400, R1,500
7900GT, R3,000
19" LCD, R2,000
160Gb SATA2, R700
500W PSU, R700
Black Antec TX1050B case with 500W Antec PSU, R1,500

These prices are average retail prices, so with some careful shopping, you should be able to get these for about 5% less. The 7900GT is the price/performance choice right now, but there are complaints about stability. For about R1,000 less, the 7600GT is a decent alternative. You don't need an SLI board for a single gfx card, but I've found that the SLI boards also have extra functionality which most NF4-Ultra (non SLI) board do not.

For video editing, 2 HDD's in RAID-0 may perform a little better.

may perform a little a better?
it will perform amazing for video editing

take the 1500 rand for the case and go a 150 gb raptor rather

Qoute

Hi all,

thx for all the advice, based on this I received the following qoute:
- Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz CPU
- 2x1GB DDR2 667 Mhz Memory
- Intel 965 Lamont MB
- 250GB SATA HDD
- 1.44MB Stiffy Drive Black
- ATX Tower Case – TAC 1.1
- 256MB GeForce 7900GT PCI X16 V
- DVDRW Internal Drive – Black
- 19” BENQ LCD Monitor – BL+ Silver
- Black Keyboard + Optical Mouse

for R11,550 incl VAT from PC International

Is this reasonable, and shall I place the order?

Thanks

I've never heard of that mobo but I'm a AMD boy now :). loll you can drop the stiffy drive. Well most people would tell you to shop around for the parts individually and buy them where they're cheapest and have fun building the system yourself. But it's up to you in the end..

It's your ballgame dude, I don't know Intel prices so could anyone of the Intel fan boys comment if this guy got ripped off? At the looks of it, it looks steep, but I'm not sure

Was thinking the same thing...for R12K you should be able to get better than that. Take your time dude (if you dont need a pcright this instant), it's well worth it. Shop for individual parts, do your homework, see what suits you best.

ok this may sound dumb but... in the junkmail there should be and add in the computer section... the place is called viva computers and i get every thing from them... there a good 5%to 10% cheaper than any where else...
