Help me with my diet..

Well you generally know what is healthy and not :)

Try eat a high protein breakfast (poached eggs). Also add chilli to your diet-helps repress hunger and increases your metabolism.

Try not to stop all your food cravings other wise you will be doomed.

Im currently using an exercise bike but also trying to find a good basic weights work out.

Plus carbs are healthy! Just change your bread/rice etc to brown.

okay, let's look at the highest probability risks that diet can cause / prevent:

1. mortality due to heart conditions - eat less cholesterol, less fried food, less unhealthy fats, more good fats (nuts, avo, unsaturated oils), less red meat and lean healthy forms of protein (legumes, eggs etc)
2. mortality due to cancer-related illness - don't smoke, eat less hormones (esp meat & dairy products), less smoked foods, higher fiber carbs, more fresh veg & fruit of different types.
3. obesity-related illness (diabetes, organ dysfunction, muscular-skeletal strain, lethargy, apnea etc) - less alcohol, less refined carbs, less sugar, low gi, low kiloujoule, high fibre. avoid cereals, bars and drinks with the word "energy" in it.

while obesity may be an obvious health risk while you're young, a lot of the patterns you form now will have an impact as you get older and your risk of cancer and heart disease increase.
people need to educate themselves around what is healthy and what's not - if you don't understand the mechanics behind food, you'll always be swayed by the latest fad.

Also people need to realize dieting does not mean starving yourself or limiting what you eat. For some people sure but dieting is about watching what you eat so you can lose weight because diet is more important than exercise if you want to lose weight in my opinion.

No point eating poorly and do insane amounts of cardio, counter productive. If you ate well and did moderate to insane exercise the results would come far quicker.

I don't believe this whole story where people work off what they ate because to me it means the person who thinks that has very little knowledge on how a persons body processes food.

Perhaps you guys are right and diet has very little to do with losing weight, 2-3 hours of cardio a day and no diet could work but i never lost so much weight because i did 2-3 hour of cardio, i lost weight because i started eating better.

I wish I could lose weight, I know exactly what I need to do but I just cant eat better, healthy foods taste like **** :(

You get used to them. I used to buy a bar of chocolate and some chips with my lunch, these days I snack on fruit instead. It took me a while to resist the temptation to pick up a bar of chocolate, but once I had resisted it a few times, it felt natural to not buy one.

Change your habits, and you'll adjust to them. But it might take a while.

I agree, if you have your diet correct, then you will definitely see results faster.
I just find that people who try change their diets too much tend to give up fairly quickly. I certainly find it demotivating not eating a lot of what I want.
Would I get better results if I did change my diet, certainly. Am I happy with exercising enough to lose a bit of weight and still enjoy my lunch, definitely

Research has shown that you make more progress if you exercise when hungry...so pick the time well...maybe before breakfast. I'd suggest jogging. Start with a very short distance like around the block...just to build the habit & then increase.

Cut sugars and carbs. Load up on protein. Definitely no sodas. If you're not at risk from a heart perspective then you can also utilize stimulants. I'd go with Ceylon tea multiple times a day...it won't make you wired but boost the metabolism slightly.

Then you're doing it wrong. One can actually get healthy, delicious and volume all at the same time if you do it correctly. e.g. A monster sized greek salad w/ high quality ingredients.

Yea no doubt dieting is a challenge if you use those extreme limiting diets, i do see your point there and i must admit that is actually very true. The flip side to that argument is eating normally and then seeing very little results in the gym, that can be demotivating as well.

A lot of what you want is generally why a person lands up fat, so you need to start eating alot of what you don't want if you want to lose weight. I would rather skip a bad meal than eat one and then have to work out for 2 hours to burn it off :D.

I have massive doubts about herbalife.

early morning exercise is also supposed to raise your metabolism throughout the day, thereby increasing that fat burning potential

Fair enough, I reckon a decent balance is needed. I tend to eat all right, but on the weekends I have a takeout or three etc.
Honestly, I found cutting out coke/fizzy drinks and crisps one of the biggest changes for me.

As for the 2 hour sessions, I love exercise and sweating (as long as it has a point, I cant just run...I need to chase a ball around somewhere) with the exception of rowing for some reason (I can zone out on a rowing machine like I do on a squash court).

Fair enough though, I guess my advice was a little harsh and I should have been more assertive when saying that a decent diet is definitely needed to improve the results desired

Diets don't work in my opinion. While you are on diet you loose weight. When you achieve your goal wieght you revert back to eating the foods that you restricted yourself from while you were on diet and in doing so you revert back to old habits and most likely put on the weight you lost while on the diet and so the cycle continues (it might take a year or 10 to gain the weight).

I think that if one has a weight issue, it would be advisable to make gradual changes to ones lifestyle while taking note of what works and what doesn't. Its a process that takes time and not everyone is the same, so try different combinations of food and more importantly just watch your portion size. Don't eat more than 150g of chicken, fish or beef per meal and try to limit your carbohydrates to taking up 25% of your plate, vegetables (preferably your green vegetables) should occupy 50% the plate.

You need all 5 general groups of food types (fruit, vegetables, carbohydrates, protein, fats) in your diet. portion size is the secret to losing weight, not having any carbohydrates in your diet will make you exhausted.

No, it doesnt. Ever heard of the atkins diet? This is not a new idea, its been around since the 60's I think. Read up on ketogenic diets.

The idea that fat is bad for you while carbs are good is a complete lie.

Honestly, whatever you want.
As long as you burn more than you put in, you will lose weight.
So if you wanna go do a buffet, cool, make sure you work that off though.

I dont like diets, each year there are new diets which disprove the old diets etc etc.
Things are simple, lay off the fizzy drinks, crisps and sweets. Eat less bread and carbs, run like its zombieland.

+1

I've never drank fizzy drinks, except beer so I'm ok in that department :D
I have however cut take-aways or junk food completely (or 99%) out of my diet.
I still eat everything else though like chops etc and I still cook with butter (not marge).
I don't do chips or sweets either, I now snack on fruit & salty cracks or cream crackers.

If I eat junk these days I wake up the next day feeling schite, similar to a hangover. So one can only wonder what crap they put in there.

As you get fitter you will actually get less hungry, dunno how that works though but I found that I even eat less than I used to these days.

Just keep exercising, cardio is good ;) I can't be bothered with weights.

Read the book "burn the fat feed the muscle" by Tom Venuto, it will change your life

The Atkins and Sureslim diets have been very successful, and yes carbohydrates (complex) are eliminated from the diet, however you still consume carbohydrates (simple) on the Atkins diet. A diet drawn up by a dietician is still going to advocate the consumption of all food groups for a balanced diet for the time being.

No more than 20g of it during the initiation phase, which is 4 teaspoons of sugar. A slice of bread has more than that I think. So, strictly speaking yes, but the amount is incredibly low compared to a normal diet.

EDIT: Besides, you are actually wrong. It restricts both simple and complex carbs. See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atkins_diet

No mention of "eat as much simple carbs as normally would"

What are "empty carbs"?

I saw in a book that to prevent fat in your abdominal area you need to avoid foods with a high sugar to carb ratio. Is this true?

Get an eating plan from weigh-less or weight watchers and hit the gym.The reason why people are too tired or unmotivated to workout, is because they shovelling krairp down their gullets for the better part of the day.
Eating correctly is the key.If you have sustained energy throughout the day you'll be up and about in the evening. This means that a simple 30min cardio routine will be a walk in the park. You'll even wake up refereshed ready to to execise in the morning.
People experience constant insulin spikes througout the day- this screws you up in the evening ,when you'd really like that extra bout of energy.
Tip.Gave up caffeinated coffee and last week and already Im retaining more water than I used to.Previously, everything I drank just passed straight through.
