My son's laptop started giving trouble a few weeks ago. Pressing the start button would give a flash of the LED but nothing further would happen - it would not boot up.
Google suggested that the start button may be the cause of the problem. I duly dismantled the thing and cleaned the start button with contact cleaner. Everthing then worked fine.
The problem has now re-occured. Press the start button and sometimes one gets a flash of the white LED - other times nothing. I once again dismantled the thing (getting quite good at it!) but this time cleaning the switch has no effect.
Anyone out there has any suggestions or anyone out there who can affect repairs? I am in Cape Town
TIA
James

The thing that turns it on - on the hinge at the right hand side

Take out the battery and only use the AC adapter. Perhaps the battery is busy dying.

Wiki:

The Studio 15 (older 1535-1537 models) and 17 (1735-1737 models) suffer from problems with the touch sensitive controls where either the eject button or start button for Dell MediaDirect would stay lit for a few minutes after the unit was powered on rendering the rest of the buttons useless. However, a firmware update for this media panel posted on the Dell Community forums has been reported to fix this issue. Another solution for this issue is to power down the laptop and remove the battery, then holding the power button for thirty seconds to fully discharge all remaining electrical power in the system, draining any residual flea power.

Try that.

I have studied Google quite intensely and have tried all the suggestions. Cold boots, taking out the hard drive, taking out the memory, switching the memory around. I did not attempt to remove and reseat the CPU - it has a complex heat sink and I know my limitations.
Just to repeat the symptom(s) - when one presses the start/power button on the right hand side, there is a brief flash of the white LED next to the switch. It immediately goes off and nothing further happens.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I faced the same issue this week with a Inspiron Laptop. It was under warranty. The motherboard was replaced by Dell Support (or at least their outsourced company). This fixed the problem.

+1

Symtoms seems to be MB! Chance of actual power button being faulty 2%

Thank you gentlemen!
Who are Cape Town service agents? The Dell website does not make it clear
