'sup folks,

I'm in need of getting an internet connection soon.

What I have:
Dell latitude e6520
Ubuntu Meerkat
A landline that's ADSL enabled.

What I need:
A fast reliable connection.
Used to connect to work (VPN) and general surfing.
No big downloads.

Ideally I'd like something that's mobile.
Problem is that I live in Sunninghill, and from what I see with cell signal is that wireless would be a really bad idea.
Anyone else experience this?

What'd be nice is an ADSL package with a broadband addition.
Does something like that exist?

Failing that, a normal ADSL line would be fine.
Then my question would be which ISP?
Are there any problems with modems and Meerkat?
k tnx

I assume you mean ADSL with a MOBILE broadband addition. A product like this is WAY overdue... I would suggest you get a capped ADSL for home that's unshaped and then go for the CellC Wooosh thingy for mobile (it prepaid if you's like that). I've been using my Woosh dongle on Ubuntu 11.04 without issue.

Just get one package

8ta 10GB deal is all you need. Only cost R200pm
If you do not get 8ta coverage then there's always EmptyN (2Gb pm for R149 or the uncapped promo for R299)
or Cell C.
No need to involve Telscum, they will just add to your misery.
I am in the same position as you and all I use is the EmptyN package (2gb for R149). No problems so far.
I do net get 8ta or cell C coverage though.

look at G-Connect or wirelessg. They will allow you to do ADSL as well as 3G on the same account as well as WIFI in the airport, coffee shops, hotels etc.

@hambone: Ppl seem to be having issues with Whoosh, or rather the CellC network.

@LPCPT: According to the 8ta website, I have coverage. Not sure how much I can trust that though. We don't even have streetlights in Sunninghill!
And AFAIK the 8ta 10gb for R200 has this
Internet 5 Promo: Anytime of the day except between 12AM – 5AM
10 GB Midnight Surfer:Between 12AM -5AM only
So that's R200 for daytime, and +R100 for 12am-5am.
What sort of speeds do you get?

And what's with all these places having 24 month contracts?
2 years!

Currently checking out g-connect...

Ok I'm going to go with an Axxess prepaid for now and see how it goes.

I'll need to buy a router. And I'll get line rental and bandwidth from Axxess.
What else do I need?
I have a landline rental, and Telkom's line checkers says the exchange is ADSL supported @ 10240.
So do I just plug in and set up the router?
