Hey guys, I am looking to set up a WISP in my area, but dont really have a clue on how to do this. What licences do i need to get, do i need a licence to use satelite connection? what equipment should i have?
I aint scared of making noises, and I like challenging big corporations, ask absa.
Any help or replies will be greatly appreciated.

The one I am currently using isnt adequate enough. And obviously, one can make money on it, depending on what i am allowed to and not allowed to do

If you don't have a clue then don't do it.

save yourself the trouble, just give me the cash !! rather than blowing it on another failed wisp attempt

Azazel,

There's a big demand for cheaper internet access. Big problem with most WISPs is the setup costs to both the WISP AND the customers.

My suggestion is to set up a group of Wi-Fi hotspots in high-traffic locations. This is much simpler and, in my opinion, more profitable than starting YAW. (yet another wisp)

Check out the following to help you get started:

www.skyrove.com (my software, that's why it's first)
www.picopoint.com (my strongest competitor)
www.sputnik.com
www.fon.com
www.prontonetworks.com

For equipment check out:

www.unitermdirect.co.za
www.miro.co.za
www.scoop.co.za

I've found both Uniterm Direct and Miro very helpful with advice on how to do all things wireless, though I haven't dealt that much with Scoop.

If your aim is to help provide cheaper internet access to more people, you'll also find PLENTY of help in the Wi-Fi community!

Best of luck with getting your new venture off the ground!

Azazel - Welcome to the forum.

Can i suggest you use the search function of the forum and then once you have read previous threads on this subject you can come back to this thread and ask more questions.

you will notice if you do your homework that this is a very "touchy" subject in this forum.

Thanks guys for the link and partial advice, have a general idea on how to get this right, just thought there were some questions you all might be able to answer for me. Looks like I will actually have to speak to a lawyer and find the best system to support my venture myself. But really thank you for the links again.
