Guys

I have this pdf doc that contains a number of images. It is not a big file - 2.91MB, 148 pages to be precise.

When I open it up on my work pc, it opens fine. Opens quickly and I can scan to the bottom pages.

However when I open it up at home, it loads the doc aboslutely slowly. I can literally see the words being loaded on the screen. It takes forever to open ... eventually I gave up.

What could be the problem? I notice this issue on other graphic intensive pdf's as well. If the pdf contains a lot of text it opens up instantaneously.

Please give a some advice.

My pc's got 4GB Ram, Q6600, 8800GT gfx.

Thanks in advance,
sdd

I might also add that recently I have noticed that when I start up XP, it takes a long time for all the icons on the screen to show up.

I wouldn't know what the hardware prob could be but I stopped using Adobe and switched to Foxit when I had the same type issues ........ worked like a charm since.

(your 2nd post seems to suggest some hardware prob though)

that would be your first test..

Does the PDF open up in a different PDF program?

If not, then you have a different harware/software issue.

Where/how is the file being stores on your home computer? Is the file corrupt or stored in a dodgy place on your hard disk. Do a defrag.

copy the work PDF and take it home with you and try open that copy?

Otherwise begin diagnosing your RAM or HDD for defects.

Do other files also open slowly on your home PC?
Have you checked your log files (Applications log) for any errors?

Yes, my home PC is the one that is problematic.

I will diagnose my RAM tonight. HDD are defragged often.

Also I will copy the files again that load them again to see if it not a corrupt file.

One more thing that could be a problem is if your home pc has disconnected printers in its settings. Sure sounds funny, but on some software this has caused major delays in starting up for me.

Yes, that is a good point! Happens to me a lot here at the office... but usually only once I have the document open.

an update to you:

used foxit and it works like a dream. The file was not corrupt.

I think there must have been some screw up with adobe reader.

I also ran memtest and my ram is ok.

Foxit FTW !!!

Just be aware that even though Foxit supports PDF "fill-in" technology, it is not compatible with some websites which use the technology, esp. for us the SARS website. Minor issue, but one which requires us to still keep Adobe Reader on our systems.
