Hi I am planning to buy a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD to replace a laptops HDD. But the problem is I don't know how to go about cloning my HDD. I know samsung provides a software for doing that but the problem is, it does not clone the OEM recovery partition. What software ,preferably free, can clone the complete HDD and its hidden partitions. Please can someone help me.

What I do with things like that is use the free version of Macrium Reflect, it clones partitions to another drive of dissimilar size and you can select recovery partitions etc.
Works perfectly and I have done it a bunch of times.

Thanks for that info but I think the free version does not clone the hidden partitions or MBR.

I'm thinking of getting the same drive. Where are you buying the drive? The cheapest I can Find is @ http://www.comx.co.za/SAMSUNG-MZ-7TE250BW-Samsung-MZ-7TE250BW-250Gb-840-Evo-Buy-p-82708.php .

Hi I'm still searching around for it. I saw one for R2099 @ http://firstshop.co.za/samsung-840-evo-mz-7te250-mz-7te250bw-p-15711 , but I think I am going to purchase the one @ comx.co.za as they have the unit which includes a laptop upgrade kit as I don't have a SATA3 to USB 3.0 adaptor and I can't find any that are cheap. How do you plan to clone your HDD and how?

Can anyone assist me with this question? What do think of the OEM SSD's that are selling for ridiculously cheap on BoB, they tend to be the Samsung 840 pro models which are normally expensive. What about the warranty as well since it's OEM ?

Its better to install everything from scratch on the SSD instead of cloning.

I agree but the problem is I have a Dell Laptop which does not include with a windows recovery disc therefore I would have to buy a new copy of windows.

Your laptop should have some kind of app installed which will allow you to create installation media. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the application though.

When I sell Dell laptops I usually just throw in a flash drive as well, pop it in and create the "install disk".

2 birds with one stone - you don't have to worry about OEM partition and you can get the benefits of a clean install on SSD.

EDIT: Check here - http://www.dell.com/support/trouble...ew?c=us&docid=533148&doclang=en&l=en&s=gen&cs

Thanks for the link. I'm not planning to clone my HDD as I'll just do a fresh install. If I'm not mistaken you get Samsung Data Migration 2 with the drive so you could possibly just use that?

I've seen those OEM drives on Carbonite and I believe the warranty is 6 months. It is though choice seeing that one can get the 840 256gb pro (OEM) for cheaper that the 840 EVO 250gb but with my luck it would be best to go for the longer warranty.

Thanx for that info, Unfortunately I am a noob  so I wouldn't know where or how to do that.

Are you installing the SSD on a PC? I'm doing it on a laptop and I only have space for one drive:( I was originally going to use the samsung software but I saw on other threads that it did not clone the OEM and hidden partitions, so will try macrium reflect or clonezilla as mentioned earlier in this thread.

If you can find the Dell Backup and Recovery software, creating the disk is literally as easy as following screen prompts.

Then once you do the transplant you should be able to just pop in the disk, boot from it and go through the regular installation process.

I am quite lazy when it comes to things like this, wouldn't suggest a highly technical or difficult option :p

Ahhhh that does sound easier thanx! I am opting out for shortcuts too !:D So to clarify, I use the Dell software to make an image on to a USB/External HDD ---> then I install the SSD ----> boot the laptop from the USB/External ---> proceed to restore the image onto the new SSD?

If its windows 8 on the machine then registration info is store in the BIOS and there is no cd key.
Still just make you life easy and use macrium, will clone that stuff from within windows. I use clonezilla on my linux machines but it requires booting from cd.

I missed the part in bold. Must say I did not read up on it as I'm not going to use it. Going to install it on my PC, yes. I would say Flidiot's solution seems like a winner.
