Help needed with SSD

Ahhhh that does sound easier thanx! I am opting out for shortcuts too !:D So to clarify, I use the Dell software to make an image on to a USB/External HDD ---> then I install the SSD ----> boot the laptop from the USB/External ---> proceed to restore the image onto the new SSD?

Sort of - that OEM partition is actually just a collection of all your Windows installation files and system drivers. So this application technically converts that partition to an installation disk for you. In other words, instead of giving you DVD's with Windows & drivers, you create your through the application.

The idea with this is that if you ever have to reinstall your OS, you can do so off the media you create through the application. Otherwise if your hard drive failed etc. you would anyways be stuffed.

Only difference here is that you aren't reinstalling after a drive failure, you are upgrading. But the same logic would apply :)

You will obviously still need to backup all your data - the same way you would prior to a complete reinstall.

Ohkay!! I will try that out when I get my SSD! Thanks so much anyways!

Hi I'm still searching around for it. I saw one for R2099 @ http://firstshop.co.za/samsung-840-evo-mz-7te250-mz-7te250bw-p-15711 , but I think I am going to purchase the one @ comx.co.za as they have the unit which includes a laptop upgrade kit as I don't have a SATA3 to USB 3.0 adaptor and I can't find any that are cheap. How do you plan to clone your HDD and how?

Can anyone assist me with this question? What do think of the OEM SSD's that are selling for ridiculously cheap on BoB, they tend to be the Samsung 840 pro models which are normally expensive. What about the warranty as well since it's OEM ?
OEM is 6 months compared to 3 years for retail, but in all honesty most problems will appear in the first few months anyway. I got the OEM drive from a seller on carbonite and in all honesty if it fails after 2.5 years I'll probably be able to pick up a 1TB SSD for half the price. The only other difference is that the samsung SSD magician software does not support the OEM drives beyond being able to run a performance test, but I don't view that as a big problem.

Hey guys I just received my Samsung 840 EVO 250gb and decided to put into an external enclosure for the time being, it's a VANTEC NEXTSTAR TX usb 3. The problem is that when I connect the external hardrive to the usb port, it is not recognized - nothing happens. I tested this on 3 laptops. Under device manager it is recognized, and under disk management I see a unallocated disk 0 and when I right click it , it requires me to initialize the disk to either GBT or MBR. Also samsung magician software recognizes the ssd too.

Any disk HDD or SSD needs to be initialized before you can use it.

When you clone hdd use option to clone entire disk. You don't need to initialize SSD. If you had initialized SSD already, all initialization data will be overwritten, including MBR. Not sure about GPT.
Some cloning software allows to copy single partition, it might require initialize SSD. If you don't want complication, clone entire disk as above.

Also there are no firmware updates as the manufacturer is supposed to provide this not Samsung. The Magician software provides the Rapid feature which is really attractive for retail consumers. Now also available last few days on the 840 pro.
