Help needed with USB

I have a machine that suddenly stopped recognizing any usb devices, it says:

"USB device not recognized - One of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it."

So i came to the conclusion that it is the onboard USB that failed, because the usb flash drive works fine on my other machines.

I disabled the onboard USB and installed a new USB card, no go, still gives me the same error.

??????????????????????

Anybody have an answer.
 
If the problem is not being caused by a faulty USB device that is still connected to the computer, take a look at www.usbman.com - instructions are provided on how to completely reinstall the USB ports as well as information about the problems with the most common onboard USB chipsets like VIA, SiS etc. The NEC UPD720101 chipset seems to be the most reliable USB controller in general. Frontier electronics in Linbro Park sells an NEC based USB card for ~R120 (www.frontier-electronics.co.za). Most of the other shops only sell VIA based ones.

Here is some USB troubleshooting software. Also look at the information about using Windows Safe Mode to look for duplicate device entries etc.

Mmmm ... I had the same error just before my memory stick gave up the ghost. It worked on some PCs and not on others.
 
I have also had this problem on my work PC - I uninstall all the USB ports under device manager and that seemed to clear it up.
 
My external HDD used to do that... later discovered that it was the USB cable that caused problems.

But since you're complaining about a flash drive, I assume you're not using a cable.
 
Thanx guy's, problem resolved. After struggling for two hours to get the pci usb card working i gave up, and ripped it out. I enabled the onboard usb again, windows reinstalled the drivers, and viola, usb working again.
 
Here is some info from usbman regarding disabling the onboard USB and adding a PCI USB card.

"Properly Installed the USB upgrade host controller should share the same IRQ as the onboard USB host controller. Check the motherboard manual or Manufacturers Web Site and install the new card into a PCI Slot that shares it's IRQ with USB. DO NOT disable USB in the BIOS as the upgrade card may not work if you do."
