I know that this issue has been posted a few times already but...... I am a pensioner and therefor on a very tight budget. I need a battery, charger and inverter to power a TV and decoder (Total 135w). I also need a separate battery, charger and inverter to power a router and fiber system as this a some distance away from the TV. / decoder. This is only needed for 2 hours during load shedding. Any ideas on what I should get.

Can you connect stuff together? Kits are expensive because someone went through all the trouble to connect it and package it, you can bring the costs down if you buy the components yourself and connect them.

The UPS hack of getting one cheap at Cash Converters and connecting a bigger battery also works if you don't have much to work with, I ran with such a system for years before I bought a proper inverter kit.

Whole thread on it already

That depends on the UPS. I know low-end APC units just switch off after about 40mins no matter what size battery is attached. Also the chargers are useless (unless you only load shedded with days in between to charge).

Indeed it does, I have an APC that worked well and did not switch off, this one, ran on 100Ah for years, and yes there was enough time for it to charge.

There's also nothing wrong with getting a separate charger to assist. But yes, getting one that does not switch off would be a challenge.

I doubt his budget is enough for that, probably why he ignored it and started another thread, but it would help to state the budget, no matter what it is.

Thanks for the useful insight. I did a bit of looking around and found this for R635 in Takealot. . https://www.takealot.com/jry-power-inverter-500w/PLID55244086 . 500w should be sufficient to run the TV and decoder. Will an alarm battery run this?. If so what can I get to charge the battery. At this rate I can put this together for under a grand. The big question is -- am I on the right path.

An alarm battery is usually 7ah, effectively giving you 84w @ 100% efficiency, it is not adequate for your needs.

At least something like this

Get yourself some cheap batteries like the royal ones that are sometimes on sale for under 2k

As for your router and fibre CPE / ENT, try something like this if you have a Lan cable that runs to them.

If not, you will likely need a separate power bank for them

Not affiliated with geewiz, just saw their products when I ran Google search so purely to provide an idea.

The above won't be automatic, you will need to manually switch over during load shedding and back to charge batteries. Lifespan of battery won't be great.

Takealot is a scam, you will probably find a similar 500W cheapee at this shop, they have batteries as well, No, you alarm battery is not going to work.
