Hi All. Me again.

Here is my situation:
I'm currently sharing a connection with the other flat on the property, connecting to his router wirelessly. He's on DoBB lvl1.
I now want my own account, running on the same line, running through the same router, but without disrupting his connection, and not causing him any admin when he wants to connect. i.e. if his PC and my PC are both on, we are connected through the same line on 2 dif accounts.

A friend who works in IT is coming over on Saturday to sort it out and use his test account to make sure it works.

Does this make sense to you guys?

Now, assuming all goes well, I need to choose an ISP. What I would like to do is get 1 account with open web that has 30gigs local for local gaming, and 1 account that has 1-2 gigs international for when I want to game on Steam and XBLive.

Is this feasible?
 
yes, have your friend put the router into bridge mode and you create the PPPoE connections to your ISP on your computer and "dial-up".

Check out Axxess or WebAfrica for the accounts you need.
 
Thanks Gary. I wanted to get an openweb account for local gaming, and a seperate one for the international stuff, and switch btw them. But is it possible to Have one account that "splits" the bandwidth so that I can use my local bandwidth without having to finish my international first?

Do a search for routesentry on this board if that is what you want to do. It's quite complex, but the guys here can help you. The easier way is just to make two PPPoE connections - one for your local and one for your international.

BTW, there is such a thing as "half-bridge" mode. If your friends router supports it, it is possible for him to have his default settings in the router all the time and you dial-up when you want. The only problem with that is that when you are not dialed-up you can access his account. would be better for you both to dial-up.
 
I think that I'll do 2 accounts, have his access his own on default (don't wanna inconv him, seeing as he's doing me a massive favour), and I access mine via dial up. Prob do the 30 gig local only Open web, and 2 gigs of international from Axxess.

Does that sound like the best alternative for my situation?

you are welcome, but my technical knowledge is pretty limited! :p

when you say openweb, are you talking about the "openbrowse" thingy? cos I think there was a thread regarding openbrowse and routesentry.

and when you say "He's on DoBB lvl1" about your friend, what does that mean? is he on ADSL? Cos you might get a broader response if you post this in the general ADSL section.
 
Not the openbrowse, just the local only.
I was refering to the Telkom Do Broadband 1gig account.
Gonna set up this w/e, get the 2 accounts running, and then look into RouteSentry.

(should have put this in the adsl section, Doh!)
 
for ease of uses i would get the local and international accounts on axxess.
once you bought your bandwidth through them you have 12 months to use it up in.
thats for the local only, for international you can get the prepayed that last for 12 months.
just dont buy the basic as that is month to month and does not roll over all those gig you buy. ;(

And they have a nice interface that manages all your axxess account in one place,
only thing is you have to log out of one account to go to the next one on your router
i wish you could mash them together :) one login to rule them all :D

Haven personally use it so disregard what i was rambling about early on.

open web 30gig local account is a monster and its cheap as chips, but is it month to month cap
or longer, if month to month would you rely use 30gig? e.g. axxess local 12month roll over.
 
Hi , What you might find ( depending on what he is doing ) if he is connected to the internet and then you decide to use your account to connect at the same time , there is a performace issue in speed - bandwith, I find there is a noticable drop if you an online gamer.
 
The speed dip is understandable. He only really browses, and quite infrequently so I'm not too worried about that.
My prob with axxess is that I want their semi-shaped to run for int bandwidth, and a simultaneous account for local. I doubt I can do both on Axxess and use RouteSentry. Has anyone tried this?
 
I just want to run this through my head.
1:you are going to set this router in bridge mode.
2: you and him will them have to use RouterSentry to access the internet and the issue of bridge is there is no firewall on the router
3: he will login to his own account, whiles you will be login to two separate accounts at the same time.

to be honest, i would love to see this work.
Please give update after the weekend on what happened.

with axxess the joint part with the account is only how you pay and login to your adsl accounts portfolios, as far as i can see the adsl login process of the accounts are completely separate.
It is rely easy to get one up and rolling, all you need is a local SA credit card and you'll have it up in two secs. I only suggest that you buy two starter 1 gig account as you need e.g. semi-shaped, local and test it out as not to brake the piggy bank, then finding it does not work.

Turns out that his netgear router won't let me bridge such that he doesn't have to log in everytime. So what I've actually decided to do for now is just topup his account with an extra gig or two from time to time.
If I find a decent router that supports him being able to surf without ever logging in, and I can have my own seperate login that can run 2 seperate accounts, then I'll pick it up.

Just gonna have to settle for piggybacking on his account for now. At least it's only costing me the bandwidth that I buy for now, so btw R65-R130 a month.
 
This is more of a hardware version of what you wanted to do, with multiple routers .

What i was thinking is if you bought another router with a wan port on it you could link him straight to the internet being always on, then you could just use RouterSentry to logon to your two accounts.
E.g
1:router connected to telkom line that is in bridge mode.
2:the second router would be plugged in to the first router acting as a normal router and can be logged into a single account that is alway on, this is for your freind to use.
3: you use a ethernet cable to connect your computer onto the first router and use RouterSentry to logon to your accountssss.

I think this would do everything that everybody wants, dam i want to test this out myself :)
i have two router and they can go into bridge mode but they have no wan port :(
good luck on getting it right.
 
That sounds like it should work. Don't have the cash right now though for another router. Will def keep it in mind for one day.
