Yesterday I bought a Brand New core2duo cpu from Computer Corporation for My new Home built System. Its a low end Pc for Surfing the web, nothing hectic.I got a New Gygabyte 945 Mobo for the job.I assembled everything like I should and then hit the power switch.First thing I noticed is that the CPU Fan spins for about 3 secs then nothing while the whole system boots up,I then shut down immediately.

I took out the heatsink+fan and tested in on a friend's mobo and it works,I also tested the Mobo by connecting another fan and it works. What am I doing wrong here? Please help ,advise as I'm really stressed. All these Components are New and are working perfectly;Only the combination of this Mobo+Cpu fan messes My head up.Pls advise.

It could be one of those things where it only starts spinning when it starts to get hot,try checking bios settings for CPU fan speed or something like that. My power supply is like this, also gave me a fright when I didn't see a nice spinning fan :)

Yeah, check in the BIOS it's most probably a setting there that only activates the fan once the CPU reaches a certain temperature. :)

Spin

Some motherboards you have two power connectors, make sure both are connected.

Myn did the same thing..Its perfectly fyn. But i would change it

Get into the Bios..... under PC Health Status............Look for "Smart FAN control Method" and "Smart FAN control Mode"

Change "Smart FAN control Method" from Auto to Legacy and "Smart FAN control Mode" from Auto to PWM

Auto lets the BIOS control the Cpu Fan

Hope this helps..
Cheers

I understand,What Bugs Me is the fact that when I install my friends cpu fan it spins immediately.Unfortunately he refuses to swop with my cpu fan even though it works on his mobo. Will definitely have a look at the bios settings when I get homw tonight.

a wild guess here, but I think I am right...

your cpu fan has 4 wires.

your friends one has 3 wires.

the 4th wire is the pwm speed control, for newer intel fans.

3 wires fans on a 4 wire header (which yoru motherboard undoubtedly has) will generally fun at full tilt, as they are ignoring the pwm signal (the ones that says "dont spin dammit") and just running off the voltage directly.

Your fan is "clever", his fan is "stupid". your fan knows that although it has voltage, the pwm signal hasnt told it to spin, so it sits and waits, like a good little guard dog.

I'm sure WKJ!beanie¦head will confirm

True, some fans run from direct voltage while some are intelligent, the CPU fan usually being one of the latter. That's the reason why you might be able to control a fan's speed if plugged directly into a motherboard (because it's able to regulate the fan) but not if it's plugged directly into a molex power connector (because it has no control over the fan itself)

Hadn't thought about that, BiteMe :) Haven't seen a motherboard that doesn't do intelligent CPU fan control in quite some time, though... :D

there, I fixed that for you
:D

Hehe, tonight isn't a good night for my concentration... Need coffee.... Need sleep...

:D

But yeah, you're right that the fans will just go at full speed because they're not being regulated :)

/me goes to bed to sleep and regain concentration :D

Quite a lot of new PC's that we build recently does his. I also swapped out some CPU fans, and spoke to my suppliers about this, when they told me it's normal. The newer Mobo's & CPU fans does this when it detects the temperature to be low

I have somehow evaded this problem by swopping my heatsink+fan from a relative of mine,Really computers can really mess a person up for nothing.

As long as it works by him and his works by Me....

Thanks Guys for Your Help!
