Hi

I have the phenom II x 4 3.4 965 cpu. Bought a new cooler to overclock.

This is the cooler:

http://www.akasa.com.tw/update.php?...rs&type_sub=Retail cooler&model=AK-CC4009EP01

But when on standard clock speeds its only a few secs then im at 60 degrees and i kill prime95.

I evenly applied fresh new thermal paste "Unick", also tried the ones that comes with the cooler.

Is it the paste whats crap or just a total crap cooler?ideling now at 31 degrees...

Any help and tips please?

'Unick'? get a decent thermal paste like AS5 or MX-4
The cooler doesn't look good either
whats your ambient temps?
and what case are you using?

You perhaps need to just adjust the fan profile, because 60'C isn't even that hot.

Secondly, applying the right (very little, but even) amount of good thermal paste, after removing the old thermal paste, also makes a massive difference.

That cooler isn't a high end cooler either.

With an Coolermaster Hyper 212+ Evo (~R350), you should've gotten better results to begin with, I suppose.

Thought this cooler would be better than stock what came with cpu.

60 is high since amd says max is 62 for this cpu. :(

As Pada said, rather get this if possible:

Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo , RR-212E-20PK-R2 , aluminum fin with 4x HDT+CDC copper heatpipes ( Heatpipe Direct Touch + Continuous Direct Contact ) , heatsink size : 116x51x159mm , 1 x 120mm PWM fan support upto 2 , sleeve bearing , 600-2000rpm , 24.9-82.9CFM , 9-36dba - for intel LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011 , AMD s754/939/940/AMx/socket-F(1207)

Comes with good enough paste.

I got it so...what to do with this cooler now? lol :(

just weird thhis masive cooler vs the stock one is worse?

Look, that cooler is most likely better than the stock cooler.

First play around with the fan profiles and if that didn't make enough of a difference, then look you can perhaps remove the thermal paste again and reapply a very very thin layer again/

ok pada. Going to my IT PC friend tomorrow night so he can do something for me, and to check this cooler also for me. If that dont work, ill just throw some more money in water as usual :(

I dont like waiting for something, im in mossel bay and no pc shop here have these stuff (unless this one what was closest but dont have PWM support : http://www.spire-corp.com/main/product_detail.asp?ProdID=1164 )...they need to order..so i went to george and bought it at matrix...

If you have to buy, rather just ask here before you do.

Also, if you really want to overclock your CPU pretty far, then we'll need to know what motherboard, RAM and case you have, and then we can perhaps suggest a better (and more expensive) cooler than the Hyper 212+ Evo.

ok will do. looking at just 4.0 , oc genie of msi auto do it to 3.8...will post specs 2morrow. thx

60 degrees is normal for a cooler with that size fan and two heatpipes. You'll need at least three to keep temps down further, because the heatsink is designed for CPUs with a TDP of 95W or less. The 965 is a 125W part, so there's your problem.

Return the thing, get a better cooler. The Hyper 212 Evo will be good, but you can also get away with a Hyper TX3 and add another fan in a push-pull configuration for better airflow.

Tbh that cooler looks similar size to my other machine (Q6600) with Hyper TX3. Piss poor cooler. Hyper TX2 was far better.
