HELP>>PC restarts when I plugin a USB device

Hi All

I have an urgent problem. Suddenly, when ever I try to plug any USB device such as a memory stick flash disk, cellphone or camera, portable HDD then my computer restarts...this just started out of the blue on Friday???:(

My PC has been running quite solidly for months and now this happens:sick:

Please any suggestions....is it software related??


BTW the devices I have plugged in I have plugged in 100's of time before so nothing is new there, no new software or devices...:confused:
 
sounds like a short on the usb port, causing it to restart whenever something gets plugged in. But I might be wrong! does it do it on all the usb ports?
 
Try do a windows repair, sorted it for this guy.

Others think it's psu related. Added any new hardware recently?
 
Oki - guess I'll be following this thread now too - My work machine resets when I eject some of my USB drives (yeah as in - click eject in windows and then watch pc just reset itself) - I've learned to save before I eject anything (of course it doesn't reset all the time - and it does this with different ports / device combinations)

*watches intently for a solution*
 
usb 2.0, machine is less than a year old, xpsp3, USB ports are all part of the case, two in front, four at the back. It does it with all of them, and any usb device, cable, direct, no matter..anything. :(..will look at some fixes but I think it may be driver related or psu??
 
@ Anubis - might be PSU related. How old is the PSU and the motherboard?

Visually check the motherboard for any swollen caps.

Does the same problem manifest itself on another PC?
 
My moms pc hade that problem, But I think it Had a BSOD every time I plugged a USB device in.
I formated and reinstalled XP, Problem fixed

About a year old (PSU is 400W), mbo seems visually OK (no "signs" or problems visible). No burnt smell or static, on ports etc etc..No this problem is only on thi particular machine. All USB devices and cables work perfectly on other machines. ..except this piece of @!@#$!!:D

I think I'm going to first unistall all the USB drivers and do a winfix..and see if that helps

otherwise format??
 
+1 for a short circuit on the usb port. Get a PCI USB card and use that instead.

well there we go,check if that little white or black plate is still in the usb port first:D
 
Dont format,just change your windows folder to windowz when you install,that way you keep everything and you can transport it all back again
