Help! pc won't boot past Xp logo....

Hey guys,

so my dear beloved pc has been running for a while without shutdown but this morning I noticed it had decided to shutdown and restart and then wouldnt go past the XP logo...

I didn't see any warnings but then I wasn't near my pc when it decided to go haywire on me...

Have tried to reboot a few times but it keeps doing the reboot thing and yes that screen with all the options: safe mood etc comes up but it doesnt really go anywhere...

I've done some google research and most seem to think its a registery failure or a dreaded virus!

So any thoughts from the techies??? I also want to know if I will be able to retrieve any data from my hard drives if I cant find a solution to the problem...

P.S. couldnt find anything on the mybb forums with this topic...so if there is just point me there.
 
Is there a disk in your cd rom drive?

Did you plug anything new into the pc like a camera or something?
 
there isn't a disk in the drive...

my sister took some series off of my pc last night with her usb stick...but that was last night...
 
Run a repair then. Maybe there was a virus on the usb stick or something in which case your in trouble. Can you boot into safe mode?
 
I can get the screen that runs the safe mode etc....but as it goes into safe mode it re-starts...

it just seems to me like I'm royally screwed! will attempt the repair tho.
 
Yea if it is restarting them you have a serious, either repair or pull off your info using another pc and format with a fresh install.
 
Thanks for the advice! also had a pow-wow with a friend and it seems i should hopefully have my pc up and running by the weekend!
