This is what I have:

Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G mobo
AMD Athlon X2 5200 CPU
2 x 2GB RAM
2 x 500GB SATA HDD
2 x 250GB SATA HDD
XFX 8500GT
PCI Lan card
600W Isonic PSU

Now I have been fiddling with the PC toay, dusting, removing unnecesary extra RAM, tidying cabling and taking out 1 x 160GB HDD and replacing with 2 x 500GB.

Now, when my boot drive ( a 250GB one ) is plugged in the PC does not turn on at all. The fan light just flickers and that is it. When I unplug it, it starts up but clearly can't boot...

I have tried plugging everything else cept that drive in and it works. Taking out another drive and just running that one also doesn't work...Chaning the power cable going to the hdd also doesn't work....

Any ideas?!

Have you tried plugging one of the other drives in using the same cables as the 160GB?

The two 250GBs are plugged into sockets coming from the same cable which spits into two...\the non boot one works with both, the boot one works with neither...

I assume that if you return it to it's original configuration with the 160 etc, it works again. Coz maybe you buggered up your hard drive when you dusted

Thing is, the 160 was just a drive with data on, as is the 2nd 250GB one which still allows the machine to start. It is just the 250GB boot drive that does not - I did not even move that , nor did I dust it...:(

OK, but you took cables out. I assume power supply was unplugged before doing this. And I assume you've tried to start with just the 250GB, and no other drives connected

Ya, power is always off when i mess with the cables. With the 250GB only plugged in, it still does the same thing, so it must be something with the drive, but what?

Did you unplug the PSU physically, or just turn off the power. Coz we've found if you don't unplug, then the capacitors don't discharge, and they can spike things like the HDD. Sounds like you messed the drive. Suggestion would be to strip the machine to bare essential parts. Take out graphics card if you have onboard, remove RAM, so you only have one chip, remove PCI cards. And then see if the drive will work on any channel. If not, drive definitely done in. Would recommend finding another machine to test on from there. Then if still broken, look at your options from replacement, or recovery if you got valuable data on it.

Wow, that sucks.

When i was busy with the pc i made sure to unplug the psu completely, not just switch if off...

I have my enclosure from the 1TB IOMEGA where the 500GB drives came from. Maybe i'll try it in there....

Just plugged it into the enclosure....Spark and a puff of smoke....Not a good sign. So I am guessing the drive is dead then? :(:(
