Alright, a lady upstairs' PC (using Windows XP - SP2) is driving me nuts!

The graphics driver will install fine, then when you reboot the PC back into Windows and go to Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark on the display card area and in the properties it says "Device Could not Start (Code 10)"

It's an ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 graphics card (Integrated).

I have tried totally uninstalling the driver, then reinstalling it. No luck.
I have installed the lastest version of the .NET framework and DirectX. No luck.
I have run CCleaner to do registry repairs. No luck.

WTF is going on ??? Someone please help!

Use CPU-z to find out the mobo model and manufacturer. You'll need to download the motherboard vendor specific driver to get it working.

Let me know what it is an I'll find it for you.

probably worth running driver cleaner before re-install new drivers

It's a desktop PC and It's a HP DX2200 MT. I have downloaded official ATI Radeon driver, both doesn't work. I have downloaded the official HP ATI driver on the HP website, but haven't installed it yet. I have a feeling it will do the exact same thing though.

@Juggy: that was the first thing I did as I didn't know what I was searching for. :)

I'm going upstairs just now to try out that driver, I will let you guys know how it goes :)

Thanks for all your help so far.

are u sure u goin up there JUST to install her drivers?

If u really are there to sort her pc out then try this:

Uninstall drivers, remove card, boot up from on-board graphics, switch pc off, put card back in (make sure u push it in properly)...'scuse the pun....boot up pc (but dont connect monitor to card). re-install drivers and see how it goes from there.

Did that procedure many times and it worked for me...

anyways, good luck with the pc and the lady :D

Dude, have you learned to read yet???

He specifically stated that the graphics he was trying to install was X200 integrated.

Kinda blows your solution right out of the water innit?;)

I've just come back from installing the HP driver (as given on their website), but (as expected) still the EXACT same problem exists. WTF !!?!?!?!

Now this would all be fine if she was happy the way it is, but she wants the resolution set to 1280x1024. Without the driver all you can do is have it on 1024x768. She's using a 17" LCD monitor, so 1024x768 looks ultra-***.

I'm really stumped. Please help :(

PS: LOL @ Prankst3r. I'm so angry I could rip that integrated chip off the motherboard and then spit on it.

Driver Cleaner ? If you mean manually deleting registry related entries and previous/old driver related files, then yes.

Cool. Thanks for the link. I'll try the app out anyway, although again, I suspect this issue is deeper than just display drivers.

Can't be anything else, there is only 1 driver on the HP website for that machine. It must work unless you do indeed have another GC in the machine.

Has it never worked before or did it suddenly go dilly? Do you have the driver disk that came with the machine?

There is no other Graphics Card in the PC.

Yes, our previous IT guy did something (not too sure what) and now it ain't working. I've tried the original drivers - same thing.

I think it needs to be reformatted and windows reinstalled.

Code 10
If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string appears as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, you receive the following error message:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Not sure if that will help. However maybe it is a hardware failure afterall. You mentioned an IT guy and something else, is this for a company you work for??

If so maybe phone your supplier for support and get them to replace the mobo if it is still under warranty. Same goes for home use if warranty exists. They must help in that case. Unfortunately they may tell you to do a complete format first.

Don't know if you tried to delete the device in Device Manager, restart, install again. Do this with everything under display adapter.

Wondering also if it could be a BIOS issue as it is integrated. Try BIOS flash / update. Also init boot display must be onboard in BIOS but don't know if that is NB.

Anyway good luck
