Highflyer,
Be grateful that it doesn't display that the C:\windows\system32\config\system file is corrupted, in which case it won't boot at all and requires a repair install (also happened to me!).
Thats what it did display. I managed to get it boot off a Win CD, then found that RAM only indicated 256 Mb instead of 1.3 Gb. Thats when I started fiddling. PSU is 450w and has been working for over 4 years. Fans all come and lights but no monitor it just stays in sleep mode. Monitor Phillips 19" CRT 2 days old.

Yeah then what probably happened when you booted off the CD was that windows reverted to the original system file which had your original configuration saved when you still had 256MB RAM in your system (before you upgraded). That's when things could have went all haywire with memory conflicts and the like.

The best (and probably only) thing to do when you get that message is to launch windows setup from the CD and continue until you get an option for a repair install. You don't need to reformat and install a fresh copy, the repair install will only repair and reconfigure corrupted files to match your current system specs (which is what you want).

Not sure about what the display problem could be though, really stumped on that one. One more thing you could try is to plug the primary hard drive that's used to boot into another PC, set it as your primary and try to do a repair install on that hard drive on another PC, then plug it back into this system and see if it works. But then again if you're not seeing anything at all before the system boots then I'm not sure what it is.

Try another gfx card in this system and see if it's that. If it's not that and if it's not your PSU then it could be mobo. Best to get that checked out by a local techie.

sheesh guys, seems like you guys have gone through just about every single possible thing that could go wrong under the hood... You should just unplug everything, gfx, ram, hdd, dvd's... then start it, if it doesn't make a sound, scrap the mobo, it has to make a sound if it's a cpu issue, and the other peripherals wouldn't power up if the psu was stuffed...

Hope you get it sorted...

Sincerely,
Shintorojin

P.S. As far as the windows, i'd say copy all the data from the master hdd that you want to keep then format it just to make sure no other little quirks come out of the woodwork...

Formatting every 3 months... Reason: Windows is a scrooge and needs it's ass beaten clean every so often ;)p
