Hi there guys,
I have just got a new cellphone Imate KJAM and keep getting messages about joining networks all over JHb , how do i surf the net while connecting to these networks and is it legal? Very new to it and dont really get the picture yet on how this works.

Thanks
Craig

imate

Hi Craig,

I suspect your new iMate runs Windows Mobile 5.0.

What's a bit irritating about Mobile 5.0 is that it remembers all Wi-Fi networks that it's tried to connect to in the past.

So when your Wi-Fi is switched on, it will spend a few seconds on each stored connection, saying "Connecting to..." every time, regardless of whether there is actually a Wi-Fi network nearby or not.

To get rid of 'stale' networks tap&hold a listed network, and then select Remove.

It's not illegal to connect to a network. (Unless you deliberately are trying to connect to a network you shouldn't be)

Hope this helps!

Henk

Thanks yes you are 100% correct about mobile 5.0 and its problems. I just want to know does one require passwords and user names to access wifi in JHB ?

wifi access

Hi Craig,

It entirely depends on each individual Wi-Fi network, and there are hundreds!

Some are 'public' hotspots, meaning they give access to the public, through a variety of methods, but usually requiring a username & password. You'd first connect with your iMate and then open Internet Explorer which will show a login/signup screen (e.g. www.skyrove.com, www.kooku.com, www.alwayson.com)

Others are private, and (should be) protected by 'keys'. They're intended for use only by certain individuals or employees.

Good luck!
