Help protect the valuable SMS

Nope, there is no need to protect the SMS... not until operators make it free like it bloody well SHOULD be.

SMS is great if you're in a spot with no 3G/EDGE coverage, and need to get a message out.

Spammers should just **** off... I'm gautvol of those ne'er-do-wells who just steal people's bandwidth and resources.

The carriers need to responsibility for sms spamming.

And, no, I don't care what technological challenges they face so to do.

This.

I won't mind if I subscribe to some shop, and they send me updates regarding new products etc via SMS. I opted in.

But what grates my carrot is the shops who'll send bulk SMS'es out, advertising some arb special. This I did not agreed to.

There is a market for a SMS blacklist.

Already you can use DNSRBL to block spam etc. Why not the same for SMS'es?

The carrier can put the SMS filter on their network, and filter the SMS'es before it reaches their subscribers.

The carriers will implement this the moment they aren't making at least R0.5 per sms.

Agreed, to hell with the sms.

There should be more apps like BBM messenger and Whatsupp that would put the SMS to bed.

If its spammers doing it, so be it.

I use an sms spam manager on my phone so I don't get those annoying sms messages except from people or institutions I allow to send me text messages.

I find it works beautifully.

SMS is still the only universal messaging platform for mobile phones. I can send/receive SMS's on every phone I know about, no matter how cheap it is. Many others (BBM, Whatsapp, instant messengers) require me to get a smartphone, and some require an application license fee as well. No other platform is as widespread or as well-supported.

The answer most likely lies on the same road as email, with spam filters.

Has anyone asked Alan Knott-Craig for his view on this ? :p ;)

Adding to this...

SMS is also a very important communication tool for deaf and dumb folks.
