Hi guys I am new to the forum and would appreciate it if you tech experts could answer a few questions of mines.
I have browsed the forum and learnt much but I still have some questions which need answering.

I have a 1GB Telkom Adsl account at my folks place in Dbn.
I have recently relocated to Jhb where there is also a 1GB Telkom Adsl account at the place I am residing.

However I would not like to use this as the person to whom it belong utilises the cap fully.

I would like to know
1. Can I use my Dbn account and cap at the place in Jhb simply be setting up a connection with the username and password of the Dbn account?
Can I do all this on the 1 modem ie having 2 Adsl accounts on the one modem?
Or would I need to reconfigure the modem everytime to change accounts or alternatively use 2 modems?

2. I also have a work laptop given to me. It is an Acer TravelMate TM8571
It however only has a 50mb per week 3G internet with an MTN sim card.

I am considering getting 3G as an alternative. I have browsed some offers and notice that it requires a modem and I have seen that the likes of iburst sell this modem expensively.
What modem do you require for 3g? Is it similar to the Adsl modem?

I assume my laptop has a 3g capable modem since the 3g works on it but can someone tell me what type of modem it has?

1 - Yes you can use the account, and no, you cant use 2 accounts on one modem. You can however use Routesentry for this by creating a Dial-up connection in windows. Google it for more info.

2 - If your laptop has a built-in modem then you are lucky, it will take any sim card, vodacom or MTN.
If it doesn't then a 3G modem will set you back R1500-R2500 depending on where you buy it. I know gogga connect used to sell 3G modems at dirt-cheap prices...
A Vodacom contract would be your least cost, if you dont want a contract then the pre-paid option with Data bundles are the way to go.

or try Telkom's 3G its cheaper and uses a Vodacom sim and the modems are like R500 +\- (its the cheapest option) just cheak for coverage!

I have shared a single ADSL line and router. You would create a PPPOE connection on your laptop with the username and password for your adsl account that you use in Dbn. Attach via wifi or utp cable to the adsl router in Jhb and "dial out" with your connection. You will use your own data caps, but will be sharing the ADSL line.

The issue comes if you forget to dial out with your connection or if your connection drops - in this case you would be using the connection programmed into the router.

As long as your router allows PPPOE passthrough, with the rubbish telkom routers i doubt it....

Thats not the complete truth...
Some ADSL modems can dial more than 1 account. Secondly, you don't have to use RouteSentry or my Traffic Splitter app to simply dial a PPPoE (ADSL) connection from Windows.
Like with the D-Link 2500U, I can set it up in such a way that both accounts would be connected simultaneously AND each tenant would utilize his/her own ADSL account, unless he/she knows how to force an IP address :)

You could simply let the other tenant, that owns the router, set it up in bridge mode. Then each person dials their own ADSL accounts without using each other's cap. Just note that when you are using the router in bridge mode, you won't have Internet access on any network attached device UNTIL you dial the PPPoE connection from that device.
Also, even though you are dialing 2 separate ADSL accounts, you would still share the bandwidth. eg. on a 4Mbps ADSL account, you can't get 2x 4Mbps bandwidth if you use 2x 4Mbps ADSL accounts :)

Edit/update:
The "crappy" Telkom 5100 router can run in half-bridge/PPPoE passthrough mode too. Just remember that when you're using half-bridge mode, the person that isn't dialing his own ADSL account from his PC, would then utilize the account configured on the router. This is useful in some cases, but it could also be a major disadvantage - like in your situation.
