We have Telkom ADSL, Mweb ISP. The area is Marina da Gama, about 3km from Muizenberg exchange.

When I increased our line speed subscription to 2 Mbps, the variation started. The mystery is, each time I phone in to Telkom techs and get them to reset or redesign the port, the speed ups to about 1.7 meg for a couple of days, then starts declining over the next few days to 0.1 or 2.

A phone call to Telkom gets the speed up again, and around we go. Days of the week or time of day don't seem relevant.

Telkom repairmen have come out twice to check the line and boxes. They've checked my router.

What is this and is there anything I can do?

Aargh.

Very strange problem indeed!
Does the actual line speed reduce or your download speeds?
Is the connection stable at 2Mbps?
If your line speed keeps reducing the you are going to have to get some assistance from whoever manages your ADSL line.

what is your router stats?

What he said...

Post ur SNR and atten stats, also tracert somewhere and ping -n 100 the first hop ip?

Might give a better picture...?

EDIT: for eg:

Ping statistics for 196.210.157.1:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 181ms, Average = 30ms

I have a similar problem with Muizenberg exchange, I am on the 4Mbps offering although Muizenberg is supposedly 10Mbps.
Although I have the 4Mbps line it varies from 3Mbps in the early morning (6am) and then drops off through the day right down to 120Kbps which is unusable. (can only be congestion) Telkom have checked the line sync many times and have re ported the lie just as many but still have the same problem.

Post the traceroutes as the guys suggested.
The other thing you can do, is to register for a free 1GB at Afrihost and test using their bandwidth.
