Something weird is going on with my ADSL connection and I'm trying to diagnose it, with little luck.

I can connect to any of my ISPs (MWEB, Axxess, Afrihost, WebAfrica) but it takes around 30-60 seconds to dial the PPPoE connection, which you would not expect for the newer ADSL technology, it should be roughly instant. But once I have connected there seems to be very little in the way of throughput or overall connectivity.

Basically whats happening is I dial my PPPoE and once I'm in I can't browse, I can't download, I can't connect to MSN... But I can ping and traceroute, I can try go to a pointed domain and see the URL registering the redirect, but nothing more.

I have tried two modems (a Billion and a D-Link) and the above mentioned ISPs, all with the same results.

On the traceroutes I see acceptable latencies but a lot of timeouts and packet loss on pings.

It seems to me that this is a telkom issue and I have logged a fault, anyone else perhaps know something that I'm missing?

Strange ASDL

There's your problem right there.... the rest of us are on ADSL and you seem to be on ASDL. :p

no but seriously... how long has this been going on? You do realize that Telkom is right in the middle of exchange upgrades this weekend right?

Sorry about the typo, I'm tired xD

It started today, but I spoke to telkom about that possibility... apparently its not because of their exchange upgrades.

sure its not dns or IP settings on Pc? try static IP if you using dhcp

Nah, its not that, if it were I'd have fixed it by now... sadly

My ADSL line (G.Dmt) was 'fubared' yesterday, due to exchange upgrade (Clareinch). Try ADSL2+ and see if that stabilises the line.

D34M0n7, did your ADSL line previously work? It sounded like you haven't activated your ADSL line yet.

I've had it since December, but It did remind me of how it was back then before I activated it... Which added to my concern.

My line seems to be getting better, I can at least use the internet now but every few min it looses sync for a while, its bothersome but its better than it was before.

I think that Garyvdh may have been correct though, a telkom employee did tell me the problem was not related to the upgrade but then again telkom techies are not that mentally endowed as I'm sure mot of us will agree.

D34M0n7:
Could you post your line statistics (like modulation (G.Dmt/ADSL2+), sync rates, SNR margins & line attenuation)?

Also check that your router could use both G.Dmt and ADSL2+ modulation.
