Help - Unclean shutdown broke winXP

Last night xp was taking ages to shutdown, so I just hit the off button, this morning i was greeted with a read/write error on boot.

Tried ubuntu and it gave an error along the same lines.

Tried a live ubuntu CD, said it couldn't mount,the log file contains "unclean shutdown". I tried again and the drive mounted, but some of my photos still give i/o errors when trying to copy them.

Anyone know how to fix this?
 
boot up in safe mode

double-click my computer

right click c-drive

go to tools, select error-checking (chkdsk), enable both options, reboot and go off to have a cuppa kawfeeeee whilst the HDD is checked for errors/defects/etc.
 
My other computer does this kind of thing every 4 months or so .. depending on how eskom is treating the power supply, and it's not the disks, it's the memory.

I created a boot disk on a usb drive and run a program called mt201 to test the memory, and usually, one RAM chip has given up, and then it's a matter of trial and error to locate the faulty chip.

I had a similar problem. When it did the sector check it deleted some files off the desktop. Make a backup of important stuff now if you can.
 
I'm pretty sure its not a memory issue, and the hdd issue was caused by an unclean shutdown.

Anyway, the data is pretty much lost for me now, damn, guess I should have kept backups, FU microsoft!
 
Know anyone with a copy of spinrite?
 
This dude needs Ultimate Boot, or Hiren's Boot disk.
I think Spinrite is on both of those.

But then, kids of today don't understand the concept of repairing something.
Easier to junk it and get their parents to buy a new one.

Unlike the windows fanbois we do actually know where to start looking for the problems

The difference between windows weenies and linux fanbois is: windows weenies blame the OS first, linux fanbois just find the real problem and deal with it.

Who told you that? Or is that your own approach? BTW, the comment was meant as a joke. Why do all Linux fabois get so upset as if you insulted them personally?

EDIT: It's usually the Linux fanbois that blames Windows and brags about their precious Ubuntu or whatever.

eh? guess you should take your own advice there guv...

I couldnt care less about your OS or your comments regarding my choice of one. Do not make assumptions based on text messages. You only end up looking like a... well a windows user


ps. Windows weenies and ubuntu lusers get grouped together over here. Ubuntu's the training bra of the linux world

Like I said, that was a joke, hence the :D and the :p. See this is the problem with Linux users, they are so touchy about their revered OS. And yes, I am a windows user, problem with that?

Ok, so you assume that I'm touchy about my choice of OS? Let's examine that quickly. In front of me at the moment are 2 pcs. One dual booting gentoo and Opensuse 11.1, Next to it is a box with freebsd and *gasp* Windows xp pro. Now which OS would you be referring to?

It's an OS. It's buggy. Deal with it. (Windows has even more bugs so there.)

You're the one who got touchy about the comment. And why is Windows more buggy than anything else? My Ubuntu PC downloads updates and kernel fixes every second day. :eek:

Ahh the age old fight over who's OS is better....Well allow me to jump on the bash wagon and point fingers at Linux :D - It is simple, there are millions of people using Windows compared to Linux, if Linux was so fantastic everyone would be using it. Not to mention it’s FREE, everyone loves FREE so then why the hell doesn’t everyone use it? Well because it’s not fantastic or great, it’s hard as hell to use, if something breaks only a super geek can fix it, like what’s the point? Bottom line is Linux is for the super geek who most likely has a degree in computer science and really wants to get the most out of his beloved PC (and look really smart whilst doing it). Windows is for the folks who actually couldn’t care that much about mounting drives and loading kernels and all that crap. I think the super geeks get all macho because they know they know more than you about computers and OS's and they must be really clever to be able to use Linux. Its like "Look at you looser you can’t use Linux" well wow cares...I dunno that’s just the impression I get. Ok you can call me names now and tell me im a looser, its all good :D ;)
