Hi,

I noticed this graph in another thread:

internode-adsl2-dist07.jpg

I am about 4.5km from the closest exchange and because of this i have a line attenuation of 62dB and my 4mbps line only syncs at 3mbps (which ties in closely with the graph). i was wondering, is RE-ADSL2 a function of the telkom exchange or could i somehow set my modem (Billion bipac 7300) to RE-ADSL2 to improve my sync rate?

That yellow and green line are pretty close to each other. I doubt it is a function of the ADSL modem, and I am pretty sure Telkom already boosts the signal if you opt for 4Mbit+.

Also, if you look at it, the yellow line is at 3Mbps @ 4.5km, the green just just 2.5-3Mbps @ 4.5km.

I doubt you will get any better than you already have.

Hmmmm the yellow line seemed to be at about 3.5mbps to me but looking at it more closely i think your right...

If you try push up your sync speed on a line with those stats you're going to sacrifice stability quite badly rather leave it as is or nag Telkom to shorten your copper length (or if your line rental is with an ISP get them to nag Telkom)

I am under the impression that the exchange requires RE-ADSL capable equipment or to activate this mode on the existing equipment. Telkom has not implemented ADSL2+ Annex M which would improve upload speeds significantly so I doubt there will be any interest in RE-ADSL. If LLU was implemented in South Africa the other ISPs would consider these technologies together with faster line speeds much more seriously as the benefits would attract thousands of new customers.

Is this possible? how?

Hi There,
You need to get a shorter distance to the exchange but that may be a physical impossibility. So you are going to have to accept what you have. I would certainly approach Telkom (thru your ISP if they manage the line) and get them to see what they can do.

Yea, i have basically accepted what i have but i was hoping for an easy way to get just enough to stream the likes of netflix and hulu in HD (~4mbps so im told)

I tried to get afrihost to engage telkom to improve the situation but it seems telkom just brush them off...

I have a 1mbps line currently, but struggling with stability with 60db attenuation and around 10db noise margin, and sometimes only sync at 512kbps. Might that be because I am in the red zone (on graph)? Been wanting to up to 2mbps but since not even always getting 1 I thought 2 might just be waste of money.
