Hi Guys,

I please need your assistance and advice on the following, and to setup things properly. My father has acquired a laptop for the use of business purposes.

His not tech savvy, but very proficient or enough/business wise with the general office essentials, MS Office, pastel, etc.

He will be traveling a lot in the coming months, and using wireless internet access.

I need advice on the average recommended software needed to enhance his business experience, processes, personal record keeping, data backup and retrieval, etc.

Background on his business, his a small scale project manager of a family runned development company specializing in large scale - low cost entry level housing(Estates), (not RDP.) He is the key person of the company, the intellectual backbone.

He essentially deals with contractors, suppliers, builders, attorneys, architects, business partners, the banks, investors, clients purchasing properties, originators(financiers), accountant, etc. He handles every thing, even the book keeping.

Software I have considered and the reasons why. (Under construction)

1.) Microsoft Windows XP professional.

2.) Microsoft Office suite 2010.

3.) Absa Office existential.

4.) Skype.

5.) Some form of Client relations management software.

6.) Record keeping.

7.) Anti-Virus and firewall suites.

8.) Desktop control/assistance software.

9.) Data encryption/back up/ cloud computing.

10.) Google for maps, email, etc.

11.) Windows Updates.

13.) External Hard Drive for back up.

14.) Setting up windows to prevent him or some one else from admin privileges, like a corporate pc. (any software that can do this automatically would be superb.)

15.) System tools for self diagnosing problems and fixing them.

(I'll amend this post/thread during the course of the night, I'll post this so long for any one willing, who can point me in the right direction so long.)

Other than the above, I'll be doing some quick Google research to get the ball rolling. My deadline is for tomorrow morning then he needs be up and running.

So wish me luck, atleast I have loads of coffee to keep me up and creative.

Thanks for reading, I appreciate your help, dearly!

why on earth do you want to install XP, how old is the laptop?

Just go with Win7 and you address points 1, 7, 8, 11, 14 and 15 and just use MS SkyDrive for for 9

Reason, the laptop is a bit on the old school side of it's life.

I'm trying to squeeze the maximum life out of it. I'll buy some ram for it tomorrow.

It's a celeron 1.4 with 250mb ram.

Oddly it runs quite fast at this very moment.

My dad is one of those guys who don't over spend, and picks up a cent on the side of the sidewalk if he ever comes across them.

I'll be using Google Drive for him, thank you for the inspiration.

This review helped me decide, to use Google Drive instead.

if there's a chance of upgrading from Office 2010 in the future then you'll need a SkyDrive account for the next release Office as it's integrated, so maybe consider both options, Google Drive for non MS data and SkyDrive for MS, I use all three depending on need

Wow, that seems convenient. Does Open Office, or Google docs not have an offline version?

I'm considering to use Google's email to register the company's email. I'll be building him a website during the course of this week.

Is this 2003?

Um' not sure will have to check whats on the laptop.

But, I have old and new windows distros laying around, I considered linux... lol, boy did I have an interesting argument with my father and at the end, it came to a big NO. Seems my dad is a Windows Fanboy, who knew. :erm::D

Edit: Just check... it's 2002, with service pack 2!

Hmmm, what is that program called again that pools all the pc's info? Everest I believe. Link Here

I'll see if I can get some specs on here.

Hi there a consideration may also be that XP is very close to end of life. Can you not get him on to Windows 7. Would give some longevity at least.
You might also want to look at a post I put up about ticket monitoring and other tools. This link will give you some info and a link to their website.

Regards Tim

Ah, thank you;

Well, the laptop is also near the end of it's life, IMO, it's only a temporary fix, as his other laptop was stolen a while ago.

I will buy a new laptop for him next month, with the idea to easily carry this one's data over.

I considered XP, for performance. Windows 7 chows way too much ram and the software that I will be using is not that* depended on windows 7.

You want to go through all this effort to make all this stuff work on a glorified calculator...for a month? This is a waste of time...yours and ours, quite frankly.

^This ... also, even if your dad would accept it, I don't know which linux distro / office apps you intended to run on that system that would give decent performance.

From your point of view, I will also think so, but you do not know how much I appreciated the help thus far and pms, from genuine nice people. I understand your post, by no means did I intend to waste, your time.

I politely asked for help, I did not demand it. You need not have even replied, posting just to tell me; I am wasting your time, when you, yourself took a minute or two to reply here with no contribution to this thread? :erm:

The fact is, the knowledge here inspired me. The knowledge gained here is not lost, thus next time when I carry over the data and setup to the new laptop, I can do it with ease. This thread is searchable by Google, so those who gave advice, passed on their knowledge for possibly many others in the future, and changing one person's life, even for just a moment. This is worth it for a nice person's time, I believe.

1.) It's not a waste, as this is the "crunch time" days, month, so even though it's only a little while, he will be working day and night so to speak.

2.) His currently using the Laptop, and it's running smoothly for a calculator, I tend to respect my belongings. There's no need to insult the hardware.

3.) His finalizing, many things, marketing, business plans, and architectural designs, etc. I made an a cloud server, so he runs a vpn to his database, etc. Linked with my Pc where I will be assisting him, and continuously providing him support.

4.) I don't know your background, but I did mention - time is a factor, opportunities have arisen and it can not wait. That is how the business world works, go for it or lose it.

5.) He has deadlines, and had to fly far away. (So a mobile office, virtual office it be, was needed asap.)

6.) and yes for 1 month, is better than sitting at an internet cafe. Now he has his own office, and tools to get the job done properly, professorially and with ease.

7.) The end of the day the laptop, I can use afterwords and provide the faster one for him.

So I hope the above, shows you how much I appreciate the help thus far, and I would like to take this moment to thank every one who helped.

Thanks again, I'll let you guys know how his business trip went, thank you for helping me & him to get over the last hurdle.

Now, I am off onto the company's website creation, phase 1... :D

Hi Skydrops,
Glad we were able to help and while you may only need this for a month someone else may benefit for a longer period.

Good Luck
