I've seen this sort of problem twice now, once with Windows98 and recently with WindowsXP.
When I ran Memtest32+ on both occasions, it picked up RAM errors. When the faulty RAM was replaced, the funny registry error was gone as well.
(Yep, I'm a PC tech...)
Something to keep in mind for next time.
When troubleshooting, I tend to do the easiest things first (swapping out RAM or testing RAM), then the hardest things later (backup, reformat, reinstall).
