I ordered an item for around R250 from Aliexpress, made a calendar note to open a dispute before the buyers protection expires, that note was for today, I go to open the dispute and it turns out there was a short month or 2 and the buyer protection time ended yesterday.

Dismayed I go have a look on my account and it seems I can still open some kind of dispute for logistics which I have opened, it's called "Purchase Protection is running out, but package is still in transit", not sure how they let me open that if the purchase protection has already expired.

I opened a dispute asking for a refund
Dispute Reason:
Purchase Protection is running out, but package is still in transit

I sent this message:
My order is still in transit and has not yet arrived, if the seller could either please extend the purchase protection or do a refund. Kind regards

Seller replies:
We have already sent the goods, please wait for a few days more, you must be able to receive the goods, thank you!
Seller's Proposal : No return & No refund

Does anyone have any experience with dealing with Aliexpress in this situation, what do I do now, am I screwed?

I’ve had it as well before, not really the sellers fault if our customs are slow

when you track the parcel with http://www.southafricanpostoffice.post/ where is it now?

Here is my last order.

JIMC and still stuck at arrivals. Useless lot.

Tracking shows it hasn't left China yet, some weird tracking info seems it's gone all over China for the last month:

Yea that seems to have gotten stuck then was dispatched 24'th last month.

I think all you can do is hope.

I would guess it was held back due to a lack of space or logistics.

But what is the best way to approach the dispute I've opened seeing I left it for to long, am I dead in the water?

I think you left it to late..

For comparison, here is my order info.

Local date/time Activity Location Remarks
7/9/2017 9:39 AM Posting/Collection 32500011
7/11/2017 5:27 PM Departure from outward office of exchange GUANGZHOU
8/8/2017 8:10 AM Arrival at inward office of exchange JIMC A

So any day or week now it will end up at Arrivals.

Looks like it may have bounced between their customs and the international shipping hub a few times. What was the item you ordered? Seems they had to inspect it several times.

This is why when you order from AliExpress, you forget about the item so it is a surprise when you eventually get it :)

I order from AE a LOT and the only items I have not received are two PoE cameras which, was kind of my fault. The PO sent out the notice to collect a few days before I left for my December holiday's last year. I only got back in January and since it was 3 weeks (understandably they only keep your package for three weeks then RTS it) they sent my package back to China. Since it gets a different tracking number when it RTS'd forgot about ever seeing it again.

But be patient, you'll get your stuff.

It's a battery charger

I saw that, lord only knows where it's been for the 2 months since I ordered it and it's been bouncing around China post postal hubs. Hope it's still intact and in the packaging when it arrives.

Mine took approximately the same time to get from China to JIMC
Sadly mine has now been stuck at JIMC since the 8'th.

My experiences with AliExpress and China Post: I waited 3 weeks for a dashboard console, but over 3 months for a DVBT-2 receiver, and over 4 months for my Android car radio. The last two were clearly the SA Post Office's fault -- their employees are not capable of offering much more than being a warm body.

I used to buy a lot until the SAPO strikes. My last one entered the country, SAPO had no idea where my package was. Only when it got marked for "return to sender" did we find out. SAPO refused to put a stop on the return.

Not worth my time trying to buy off AE.

So after several complaints via phone and email the last week or so they are finally sending my item to my local post office.
Will see if it actually arrives.

They called me, said "sorry ne?" and asked me for my address...
