Hi

I want to buy myself a gaming PC..I'm not up to date with all the new hardware out there as I've only had laptops for the last 5 years.

I'm looking to spend around R15,000 but can push it to R20,000 if needed.

I need like everything so the price should include screen, writers, keyboards etc.

I'm currently looking to get the following and need comments please:

Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 Chassis
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 (rev. 2.0) Motherboard
700w A-Open Prima Power
Intel Core2 Duo E6850 3.0gHz Processor
GV-NX88X768H-RH ) GigabyteA(R) nVidiaA(R) GeForce 8800GTX GPU
2GB (2 x 1GB) Corsair XMS2
Harddrive Seagate Ide 250 Gb 16 Mb Cache (FHD-S2505482)
LG GSA-H55L 20X Super Multi Internal DVD Rewriter
19" LCD Monitor
Logitech 967929 G11 gaming keyboard
Logitech G3 Gaming Mouse
Windows Vista

I think this system would probably be around R22,000 depending on where you buy.

Should I rather go for an Intel Quad core like the Q6600?

Thanks for the help.

The Intel X38 chipset is round the corner - I think Asus already launched a mobo (Asus P5E3 Deluxe). Check www.anandtech.com for details.

That display is way too small - grab yourself at least a 22'' display. Shop around.

that gigabyte board is old man

get a quadcore and motherboard to go with it q6600

that mobo wont run your cpu because its 1066 fsb that cpu is 1333

Loose the E6850 and get a Q6600. (Q6600 easily OC to 3.0Ghz)
Loose the GA-965P-DS4, and get GA-P35-DS3P.
Rather than an IDE drive, go for a SATA2 drive.
If you can afford the 8800GTX, cool, but you can save a lot of money if you go for a 8800GTS, and they can handle anything.
Loose the 19" and get a 22" wide.

:pDitch Vista and get XP.:p

The X38 chipsets look pretty dissapointing, not going to be worth the price especially when they first come out, a P35 like Johnny Q suggested would be good.

I'm pretty sure that HDD isn't really IDE  If it is obviously get SATA, it's probably cheaper these days. :)

Hmm personally I'd put the whole thing off till October/November, so much new tech coming out, exciting if you actually have the cash for it like you do...

Hehehehe i agree with killa there! You can literally put it off till the end of time-Like me!

Thanks guys.

Will start reading up on the suggestions you made..I can prolly wait till end October if I must but what's "new" that's coming out worth waiting for? Are everyone waiting for Christmas shopping spree to release their new products?

The new range of intel processors will be available by the end of november (touch wood)

ja but unfortunately that is a lot of suppose too'sss.Agggh and then you don't know what the pricing will be or how long it will be before it arrives here by us...

Okay made the suggested changes:

Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 Chassis (+/- R1,276)
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P Motherboard (GA-P35-DS3P) (+/- R2,000)
700w A-Open Prima Power (+/- R1,000)
Intel Core 2 Quadro Q6600, Quad core, 2.4GHz CPU (+/- R2,650)
GV-NX88S640H-RH GigabyteA(R) nVidiaA(R) GeForce 8800GTS GPU, 640MB 320Bit (+/- R4,400)
2GB (2 x 1GB) Corsair XMS2 (+/- R3,300)
Seagate Barracuda SATA II 400GB 7200rpm 16MB Cache Hard Disk Drive (+/- R1,200)
LG GSA-H55L 20X Super Multi Internal DVD Rewriter (+/- R400)
Samsung 22inch LCD Monitor (+/- R3,100)
Logitech 967929 G11 gaming keyboard (+/- R530)
Logitech G3 Gaming Mouse (+/- R500)
Windows Vista (+/- R1,300)

The cost for these are also at the R22,000 if I do price searches on www.jump.co.za

Questions: Take in mind I don't want to go and upgrade in 6 months time again due to poor decision making.
1) Is the RAM I selected worth around R3,300 or are there a cheaper option?
2) Are the brand selections I made okay or do I need to change some?

Thanks.

if u are not going to overclock you could just go with stock RAM, and save a bit of cash.

Ive got a golden rule: if you have to wait longer that 7days for a new "chip" to the launched its not worth it. New stuff come out all the time, u can never say ahead.

Another thing, drop the A-open PSU, rather get brand name PSU like a Vantec, Coolermaster etc.

Yeah, stick with stock RAM. Unless you plane to mad overclock, performance RAM is never worth the price.

Oh, And the 320MB GTS is actually fine. Or what say you other duders?

Ive also heard some bad things bout Aopen psu's. U can get a nice Vantec or Coolmaster one for the same price.

Jip the 320mb is fine... I cant really see how one can justify the extra odd R2000 for the GTX
