I've been out of the pc hardware world for more than 5 years now, only using work laptop since then.

I need to buy a pc, want to spend as little money possible:
What I have is, and want to reuse:
1) monitor,
2) mouse, keyboard,etc
3) DVD writer
3) pc case from 2003 (AMD Athlon XP1700 or something). Can the case be re-used. Maybe new powersupply?

My requirements;
1) no gaming, just bought a PS3 for that
2) main use is to backup my cd's and dvd's, and stream them via Lan to PS3. So probably need bigish HD (500GB --> 1TB?)

Is it possible to keep this below R4000? R3000? Have no idea on latest harware prices and best bang for buck.

Please give me some advise. Thanks

This is all from IkonicIT, and it should be pretty quick, and for the money you can't go wrong.

Thanks for help. Some questions.

1) Since I'll be connecting to PS3 via lan for streamming, and PS3 has 1000mbps lan, do I not need the MB lan to also be 1000mbps? Or is this not relevant.

2)I see the ram is 800mhz, and CPU fsb is 1066mhz. Is this combo fine.

3) Can I reuse my chassis and just buy power supply(see above), or is the MB 'form factors"? different?

1 will be fine.
2. Will be fine
3. You can reuse the case

no real point in getting a 1000mbs lan, as it all depends on your hard-drive speed transfer rate which is NO WHERE near 1000mbs.

off topic ...

I find it odd that Sony chose gigabit ethernet, but only wireless B/G ...

Well it sure should be faster than 100mbps lan can accommodate. .

I've check real world speed tests for the WD Caviar Green, which indicates av of 76 MB/s, i.e. 600 mbps.

What will you be streaming? 1080P video?

You would need a fast drive, 1000mb lan and cat6 cable to really maximise the 1000mb lan.

When I connect to 100mb LAN I can only copy @ 10MB/s but when connected to 1000Mb LAN I can get 100MB/s

Yes, 1080P.

But I'll also transfer large files between PS3 and PC, so the quicker the better.

Is the WD green, much slower that WD black in this specific application?

Guys please help me here, two final things I need to confirm before ordering:

1) MB. The two options are:

Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2 IG31 Motherboard w/A8 + LK + SATA2
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=81_226&products_id=19238

and

Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2C IG31 Motherboard w/A8 + G + L + SATA2
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=81_226&products_id=19237

About R100 diff in price. Only reason I consider the 1st one over the 2nd one is 1000 mbps lan. I just want to confirm that I dont "lose" anything else by upgrading to 1000mbps lan.

2) HDD

Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 SATA300 16MB 7200RPM Hard Drive
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=61_64&products_id=20121

Western Digital 500GB Caviar Green SATA300 32MB 7200RPM Hard Drive
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=61_64&products_id=24798

The Caviar has 32mb cache over Seagate's 16MB, but what I gather is that Caviar Green is mostly used for storage since it is slower? The caviar black is only about R150 more expensive, not lot more but dont want to pay extra if not required. The Seagate 32MB is only R100 more.

Please help me clearing this up, thanks

Go for the 1 gig LAN option, for R130 extra it makes sense; a separate LAN 1GB LAN card will cost more than that if you decide to purchase it later.

The cache issue is irrelevant, because there is no real world difference in performance with 16MB versus 32MB cache; actually cache is a bit misleading, since it is more of a buffer than cache. If you don't want to spend the extra R100, then go for the Seagate 16MB.
