This question might have an obvious answer, but seeing that I'm quite new at this I was wondering if someone can help me out. The pc on which we have to install the ADSL router (Telkom) is on a LAN system, so we connected the router via USB. Now when you run the installation it changes the network settings, which causes my existing LAN connection not to funtion. The installation goes half way and then gets stuck on "checking ADSL router...." nothing further happens. So I unplug everything, and have to enter the settings (IP addresses) of the LAN connection all over again for it to work.

So my question is: how do you install an ADSL router via USB without interferring with your LAN connection that's already on the PC?

Thanks

Why not use the router as a hub for the LAN? Just set the IP address-range on the router to match those which your LAN uses first.

Which router are you using?

I think you need to change the settings in the router to turn off the DHCP server and make it a DHCP client instead.

Your LAN most likely has a DHCP server somewhere assigning IP addresses on the LAN.
When you plug the router in it has a default fixed IP address and it starts acting as a DHCP server as well.
In the router setup you have to:
- Turn the DHCP server off
- Tell the router to use DHCP to get it's IP address rather than use the fixed one.
