Hey guys

I am hoping someone can help me out here.

Quick run down is basically there was a bulk fault in my area and a cable was replaced now the line is back up but the ADSL doesn't sync and Telkom said the margins are too low that's why its not working.

Now they are blaming the equipment at my house as the problem.
I had this problem once before where it was also the Margins and 2 weeks later without a tech doing anything it randomly connected and worked.
Bought a new router and of course that didn't work

Now my question is how can a problem like this appear one day and be gone in 2 weeks with Telkom saying that they did not send out a Technician.

How can I get this fixed as I really don't want to wait 2 weeks again and hope it randomly comes up, its been down for a week already.

What is causing this?

This sounds so familiar. I think the "something wrong with your equipment and we will charge you a call-out fee" excuse is just another way for Telscum workers to reduce their workload even further.

This has happened to me more than once. Bad line noise for a week or 2 and then suddenly it stops.

<rant>
Something is wrong when a company forces you to pay voice + adsl rent, but when you report a fault, you get threatened with "penalties"! Lazy bastards!

100% right.
I am just tired, I don't even know whats the use in fighting anymore.

Fault was closed today without it being fixed :|

Now I have reopened it and here we go again I enter the queue for a tech.......

That is the biggest load of BS that I've ever heard. Perhaps you or Telkom used the wrong terminology here.

A low line attenuation is very good. A low SNR (signal to noise ratio) is bad.

If the line attenuation is too high, then you can simply downgrade your line speed from like 4Mbps to 1Mbps and then you're line should synchronize again without problems.

Yeah the call center said it exactly like that " The margins are too low".
Although I did relate it to the SNR and didn't push it too much as I was already pissed enough XD .

Doesn't sync at 1mbps as well, got them on the phone tonight and they dropped it to 512down 192up and it synced for a few seconds, did not last for long since the SNR on upstream was 6.
Asked them if they can drop it to 384 until it is fixed properly but was met with a flat out no, I would have to downgrade my line and when it is fixed, pay for an upgrade.

Strange thing is it is only the UP stream noise ratio that is too low, the Downstream is fine O.o

I have the same problem with wet weather in my area. The line drops all the time/won't sync and then it comes right again after some time. Surprsie, surprise...Telkom tries the same thing time and time again by blaming it on my equipment. On one of the many callouts I managed to get one of the techies to admit fault and he reckons they know exactly where the problem area is but flat out point-blank refuse to fix it. Been like this for 3+ years now. Good luck.
