Help with R9000 gaming rig

Pretty much:D I've seen guys on prophecy forums that upgrade "once weekly" it seems. Lol. And hey, the extra cash saved can always be spent on a nice set of new headphones/speakers/keyboard/mouse:p

EDIT: Just managed to get the GF's PC running with win7 and man is it moving!:eek: Seems a format of my PC is in order:D
 
Looking on the other side of things the resale value of the Q9550 might not drop much in a year or so as it is going to be discontinued whereas the prices of new tech is going to keep falling.
 
I think putting DDR2 ram in that rig is a waste. Get a decent mobo that can support DDR3 and crossfire cards.. and slap in like 4-6GB of DDR3 RAM... even if u on XP 32bit now, in a few months u can upgrade to win7 and make use of all the extra memory.

With the kind of cash ur spending, go for the best u can so u won't have to upgrade for a looong time, u'll save more cash overall like that i think.

So I assume the memory footprint of win7 is smaller than vista's? I hear that you can now buy vista with a free win 7 upgrade for only about R100 more.

I assume you went 64 bit? If one were to go 64 bit I guess all your old favorite games would no longer work (you know, the ones that you keep around because you invested so much time into them, RPG Characters, X3 - trading empires)?

Yup 64 bit. The footprint is definitely smaller than vista. Its really nice and fast at the moment. Depends what games are you thinking of playing(ie. list them:))
As far as I know there hasn't been issues with older games playing on 64 bit system..? Maybe the more hardcore variety gamers can enlighten us:D

EDIT: As for buying vista with the free win7 upgrade...thats how I also understood it...but apparently some newer versions of vista don't come with the "upgrade certificate" which is necessary for you to qualify for the upgrade. I know some users reported on something like this...can't remember exactly what the actual story was.

My laptop purchase...

Only the newer packaged Vista comes with the certificate, anything before or not including the certificate will just get u Vista only.

Learnt it the hard way with misleading advertising in Taiwan...

And a lot of retailers here in SA as well. Don't think they understood the concept all too well.
 
Well if you are interested. I have some Asus Refurbished boards that still have the Asus warranty left on them. Striker 2 Formula @ R550. If you are wanting to go i7, I have a P6T Deluxe at 2200, not the cheapest ... but its a helluva good i7 board at the price, and has at least still 2 years left on warranty. Only downer is there are no accessories ... although might be getting some this week from suppliers. But a quick decision must be made on this, as 90% of the boards are going back tomorrow.

Otherwise, PM and I will hook you up with a quote. I just quoted on a quad core system including a GTX260 at 9300, so without the graphics card, can increase the spec :)

1. What should I go for as a CPU in the 3GHz range (AMD/INTEL version and speed)Seeing as this system will have to last you quite a while I am inclined to recommend

I would still get 2x2GB sticks now even if you're only using XP 32bit. The price difference is negligible:

4. What would be a good choose of 1TB hard drive.
Seagates are apparently fine now since they have moved onto the new 7200.12 drives:

5. Should I go for extra cooling (fans).
And Extra fan/two won't kill you

6. What make and model case would you go for if you were looking for a sturdy, non-flashy tower with both front and back usb ports and additional cooling options, preferably black?
Bought one of these recently and it's quite nice:

Coolermaster Gladiator Gamers Case - No PSU R 499 excl. R 568 incl.
There are MANY alternatives of course.

And PSUs:
The Corsairs are very nice and excellent quality but they are pricey. I of course like the OCZ PSU's quite a lot as well. The one you suggested as well as the OCZ 550W modular fatality series which can be had for about R900.

So Total so far:
R6521 (Don't think Ive missed anything)
This is quite a nice speced PC for a very reasonable price.

That all seems very alluring:D Whats the warranty on the Odin 550W GT though...? I would seriously consider it if I was him.:)
What pricing could you get on the normal P5Q ASUS Intel P45 board new...?(with all it's goodies:D lol)
 
On the Odin, I think its about 11 months left, but its still brand new sealed. Will have to check in the morning, but don't think I could meet his price.
 
Yeah, but I will only know tomorrow. I'm talking about a brand new board.
 
I think so I see it just appeared on our suppliers pricelist. So if they don't have stock yet, it is definitely coming.
