Help with router (Solved)

I'm having trouble setting up my router with our ADSL. The ADSL has recently been activated and I haven't used it yet.

My router is the DSL-2640U and is working fine with the wireless internet, it goes into one of the routers LAN ports and the PCs connect to the router via wireless, I don't have to configure anything on the router to get this to work, I just set it to auto.

Now when it comes to the DSL I plug the phone line into the routers DSL jack and set it up with the settings the ISP gave me, but there are more setting in the router that they don't mention. The router indicates it’s connected to the internet, it’s “Internet” light stays on and the “DSL” light is also active. While on the phone to the ISP I created a new connection in Network Settings and “dialed” into the ISP account and the ISP tech could see the router connecting. I also know the wireless is working because I can log into the routers setup. But despite all this I can’t access the internet, it seems as though the router isn’t bridging the wireless and the internet.

Anyone have any idea what’s wrong, hopefully it’s a setting I’ve missed.

Check for firewalls, DNS settings, browser proxies, etc.

But first see if www.telkom.co.za opens, if it does but no others do report it back here.
 
When you say check firewalls, DNS, proxies, check them for what?

I have tried with both the routers and PCs firewalls on/off, no proxies, no internet works, no website, no FTP, so I can't check www.telkom.co.za.
 
Forget the wireless for a moment. Plug the ethernet cable in your pc, directly with the router and open up a browser, see if it connects.

Now, click start>run> type in "cmd" without the ". At cmd, type in ipconfig and press enter.

Look through the list, until you see the your specific NIC (network card) to which the router is connected> look at "default gateway", either copy that or write it down.

Now, go into your browser and type the default gateway address in the address bar at the top, press enter. Type your username and password, which is in the router manual. Press okay.

Look through the options, until you see where the DSL account is entered, remove that info and enter your full ISP details, including password, if you say it's connected, it's probably connected to the Telkom guest account. Save the settings, see if it's connected after a few seconds and browse.

Then you can fiddle with the wireless.
 
Unfortunately plugging the PC into the router with a LAN cable isn't an option as it's to far away.

Sorry, I probably should have mentioned the ISP is a pre-paid Axxess account. Axxess have watched the router connect on their side and the router also indicates it's connected to DSL and the internet, while all this is happening I can still access the routers setup (via wireless) so it seems both are working (and it's all working fine on this current wireless ISP) it just isn't letting the wireless network have access to the internet when using the DSL. (Edit in bold.)

Windows XP SP2, with most if not all the updates. I've also emailed D-Link SA asking for some help but they probable won't get back untill tomorrow with info unfortunately.

What exactly happens if you open a website? Does it say page not found? Does it keep loading and loading?

I may be shooting hoops, but try and restore your Winsock files using this program:

You don't need to use it if you are connected to the internet and posting here.

Otherwise,

Open your Network card properties, look in the TCP/IP settings and make sure that you are using "automatic" ip configuration.

A setting I know which stuffs up my internet connection on my Billion router is NAT, make sure NAT is "enabled", the NAT setting should be either where you enter your ISP details in the router, or at the LAN settings.

I can't remember the exact error I get when trying to open a webpage, I think it's just "The webpage can not be displayed", but can't say for certain offhand.

I've been using DHCP (auto IP), I do enable NAT. Here's a rundown of the settings used.
VPI/VCI - 8/35
Connection Type - PPPoE
Service Cat - UBR
IP Address - Auto Assigned
Serice State - Enabled
NAT - Enabled
IGMP - Enabled
QoS - Enabled

Here's images of the "Device Info - Route" and "WAN Info". In each one there are multiple things listed, probably one for each time I tried setting it up, could this be a problem?

Maybe tomorrow I'll try listing all the options available when I set up the router, maybe someone can spot a setting that will sort this out.

Just by the way was this a self install ADSL Line Installation. Just keep in mind that the line has to be verified with a self install.

I agree with teraside thought that a quick answer would be to plug in Ethernet and test via cable if you get ip and DHCP settings are correctly assigned to your computer. If you can browse thru this then at least you know the problem is wireless only. At the moment you don't really know?
 
It was a self install, though I didn't have to do anything other than putting on a splitter and a filter for the phone (no filter for the router). How do I go about verifying it?

The routers wireless works fine for LANs with or without the wireless internet (non ADSL, much fast,,,) also I can enter the routers setup and view other PCs when it's setup with the DSL phoneline, the wireless is working in all three of those situations. If I could plug the PCs into the router with LAN RJ45 cables I wouldn't bother with the wireless at all as the cables are alot faster, but I can't. This rules out that the wireless isn't working.
 
We went into a Telkom shop and asked for ADSL, and purchased the splitter and filter, but don't remember getting any order number when doing this. We did get a phonecall from Telkom later stating that it's been activated. If it hasn't been activated would the ISP still be able to see my router and acount connect but not be able to use the internet?

Got it all sorted, Telkom was up to crap, gave them a call was on hold for 14 minutes but I guess it was worth it since it's all working now.

Glad you got it sorted sorry was away till now. Guessing it was line verification?
 
Yup, but I had to reset my router first, then I could get to telkom.co.za.

It's annoying that when ordering it fron a telkom shop they didn't mention it or even give me the order number, and Axxess didn't mention anything about it either and I told them that it's a brand new DSL line.

Oh well, it's all up and running nicely now, and the speeds are stable.

I went through the same "re-verification" process when we got ADSL, including a 20min call to Telkom. Thankfully the techie spotted the issue quickly and redid the verification. Dunno why this step seems to trip up the process so often

Hi. Does anyone know what port on the router is setup for the internet connection. Im trying to setup the router as a proxy since I will soon have 2 adsl lines on my network. Is there anyway of setting up so that at any given time I can use both routers simultaneously. I know that I could setup another pc as a proxy and change the gateway to the 2nd router, but that means I will need to have that PC running all the time. Is there a way to work around this. I want to use the two routers from a single pc. Use the multiple proxy option in flashget. Any ideas?
