Hey guys

I am currently doing Server Network operating systems(70-646) and have got an assignment due for tomorrow. I have completed the whole assignment except for 1 question worth 15 marks which is a number :( I just cant seem to find the answer! I have read through Storage attached networks online and in the book and none of it has pointed towards the question they are asking.

Please I beg you guys to help me out, even if you can just point me in the right direction!

The scenario is as follows:

If you have a good explanation of SANs or have a site that can explain what they want please post it. I am not looking for an awnser I am looking for help on where I could possible find this info.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated and yes I know I need to know this stuff :(

Try http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ - they are one the best sites for reviews of SANs etc.

With regard to your questions. Most generic SANS include a Linux console, accessed via a browser. If you can't access the console then (in theory) there is something wrong with the network address assigned to the SAN. So would would start looking at address clashes, DHCP servers failing etc.

Thanks for the reply rrh I will go through that site ;)

I think it could have been because the iSCSI initiator had not been set up?!

This is my answers for the first question for now:
To establish a connection to the target you will have to create and/or configure iSCIS targets before your initiators can access the storage devises on the SAN.
How you do this depends on the types of storage devises you are using and there ISCSI target capabilities. Drive arrays that support iSCSI have built-in targets and can use a variety of administrative interfaces to configure the functions and register them withiSNS server.
I would be worried about some one finding this and using my answer but half of the people in my classes only know theory and don't even know what a mobo looks like mean wile mybb :) Now I definitely hope they don't find it!

Thanks for trying to help :")

I have finished both questions....Thanks for trying to help guys :)

If you ever come across this question and need some help drop me a PM and will be happy to guide you in the right direction.

Definitely on the right track with setting up the initiator....

throw it against the wall until it works :D

but seriously, as said above re connectivity to the console etc.

In a real-world scenario, you would :

1. Upon reception of a SAN gleefully unwrap it from its protective wrapping
2. Discard all user manuals
3. Try to connect with your web browser etc to said SAN
4. Look for said discarded manuals
5. Read said manuals, set the IP addresses up etc...
6. Connect and is able to see it
etcetcetc

My guess:
1.) iSCSI initiator : iSCSI device driver + interface, IP network (must be able to have communication between target and initiator), physical connection. (target should provide an address, normally with "iqn" in it)
2.) Sounds like one of the Microsoft MMC snap-ins. Good luck :) . Most SANs I've worked with have their own proprietary interface to configure LUNs, security, etc.

I believe you are correct about number 2 ;) if I ever need MCSE help I am dropping you a PM :P just a heads up :wtf:
