Help with Synology DS213 - FIXED !!!

Hi Guys, hopefully I’m missing something quite simple. Copying files from my Nas (DS213) to my pc I get between 50-70 MB/S, from my pc to my Nas I’m only getting 26KB/S large and small files.

My network topology are gigabit except for the router in the following diagram and all IP’s are static with the same address range.

network.jpg

All network cables are Cat 5e.

I have large packet currently disabled on both the DS213 and the PC, I have change the speed on the PC from AUTO to 1 Gigabit but also no change in speed. I have set privileges on the NAS to read and write on admin user and on all shares.

I’m yet to try ftp, can one hook up a cable straight from the nas to the pc just as a test?

Any feedback would be appreciated

What drives are you using in your PC and the NAS, with regards to the cable I'm not sure if that will work with either straight or cross over cable as these devices are designed to be plugged into a network.

Edit: From the sounds and looks of the network you have it doesn't seem like a network issue to me.

I am no expert, but I think you need a gigabit router for it to be a gigabit network.
I use LAN Speed Test (Lite) to check from time to check my LAN speed.
I don't know if this is good or not......

Im happy with the speed from nas to pc, but pc to nas is only doing 26KB's when copying file from windows explorer. Thats worst than my Internet connection.

Im going to do some more testing tonight. Something's really amiss.

See what processes are running. Thumbnail generation, anti virus, scrubbing, etc can really limit performance.

EDIT: Please report back if you found a way to improve the speed

I am pretty sure its your PC's drive thats is causing the problem here.

If you connect to the NAS directly onto your PC and it does the same. I am pretty sure it is your Drive's write speed that is stuffed. Install a Drive monitoring application and see if there isnt any write or highfly errors. you want something that monitors the drives S.M.A.R.T variables.

My system drive is a crucial m4, and everything seems to be ok. If you check my first post i mentioned that copying content from my nas to my pc i achieve a maximum speed of 91,2 MB/s which is really good. From my pc to my nas however is a major problem as I only achieve a maximum speed of 46 KB/s.

I have done a series of tests but to no avail.

My OS is W7 ultimate 64 bit

1. Direct connection from pc to nas
2. Updated the latest drivers of the nic on pc
3. Updated to the latest version of DSM for the DS213.

Next I'm going to see if I can get spare nic and if all else fails I'm going to reinstall my OS - I hope not

When dealing with drives you always have two aspects. The Read speed and the Write Speed. Each has its own pit falls. A highly fragmented disk will make your read slower and a very full disk will make your write slower.

Also now talking about an SSD there is a number of other factors. Like how old is it? Did you run the correct software on your OS to ensure a equal distribution of data over the sectors. As SSD uses flash memory that gets slower and slower every time you use a block.

good luck though

No expert, just wondering:
Do you get the same speed when using DSM file utility rather than IE on your PC?
Other processes running on the NAS like antivirus?
Direct connection should work with fixed IP (but it seems you have tried that already)
Disk health on the NAS? There is a utility somewhere on the NAS to check that.
Perhaps the raid configuration has an effect?

Thanks for your assistance, the drive is 2 months old. Normal copying between os drive and another system drive seems fine, its only when copying data to the nas via ethernet I experience the problem.

What are you copying?

EDIT: And what is the destination? If you copy pics/photos to the public shared photo drive/directory, it might take longer.

Yes same problem with the DSM gui, even ftp transfer to the nas run at the same measly speed, but the other way around it runs flat out. I manage to get another PCI gigabit nic and will test tonight and report back.

Once again thanks for all the assistance and recommendations.

What are you copying?

I actually discovered the problem when I had to transcode a 4.7gb mkv to mp4 on my main machine. after trying to copy the file back to the Nas I discovered the problem. Afterwards I tried pictures, word docs, and some of my dtp work .ai, and .ps files.

I assume you did not copy to the Photo shared drive?

No, now that you mention it the shared folder that I created for my media has Indexing turned and so does the default system shares like photo and video, I wonder if this is maybe attributing to my problem?

But even so why would it transfer at such slow speeds, when trying to transfer to the nas the system resources aren't being taxed as it runs between 0-10 percent on the cpu and the ram normally sits at 30 percent. I really believe my problem is isolated as I haven't come across users with similar problems.

If the NAS CPU is running that low, then I doubt it would be indexing.

Also try the official Synology forums. They are not nearly as active as MyBB, but there are some knowledgeable people there

Thanks, ill give them a go if I don't succeed with the spare nic I'm going to test.

After installing an Intel PRO gigabit nic my problem disappeared, copying to Nas I achieve a rate of 40MB and Nas to pc 40MB as well. Not the best speeds but will do for now. :)

That's a lot better. Glad you are sorted
