Make sure that you have legacy USB disabled in your BIOS and USB 3 enabled.

My BIOS does not have the usb 3.0 option probably coz I have usb 2.0 ports on this laptop. Any way to get passed this?

Now why buy something that is incompatible with your laptop?

If you know you only have USB 2 ports, why didnt you buy a much cheaper USB 2 external hard drive?

Words fail me.

Hmmm very strange problem, you could try uninstalling all your usb drivers and reinstall them again, otherwise I'm not sure what you can do unfortunately sorry.

You updated to Vista SP2?

Also, very unlikely, but check drive in another PC to make sure it isn't hardware related.

Hey Hey

I had a similar problem with Vista last month... also a USB3 external drive... in this case it was iTunes that caused an immediate BSOD when the drive was connected.

Uninstalled iTunes... the drive was fine... he had no problems with USB3 running on his USB2 laptop ports.

Re-installed iTunes and BSOD again.

Are you running iTunes ?

I would advise perhaps updating your chipset drivers for your laptop...

EDIT: Perhaps try running sfc /scannow from an admin dos prompt...
here is some more info on this... http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/verify-the-integrity-of-windows-vista-system-files/

The reason I bought the drive is coz it was on special quite cheap and they said its backward compatible. No I don't have sp2 by the way. However thanks everyone for the suggestions, I am going to try each of them out and I'll get back to you guys. Much appreciated!

Hey guys just wanted to update you on what's being going on: I connected the drive to a friends laptop and its working perfectly. I then connected the drive to my laptop but in safe mode, then windows picks it up. And it works fine. However it just doesn't seem to work in normal mode. The blue screen error message that appears talks about a 'partmgr.sys' file. Now I noticed this file does run in safe mode too so thus the file itself can't be corrupt. Its probable that another application/process is conflicting with the drive. So clearly a similar issue like what kilobits mentioned. Although I don't have itunes installed. Is there a simple easy way to diagnose what program is causing the conflict? Thanks!

More confirmation that you probably need to upgrade to SP2 as already mentioned above ...

If nothing else works you could try to investigate whether there are any known issues with the USB3 to SATA chipset and Vista. I think that Verbatim uses either the VIA VL700 or the JMicron JMS539 chipset.

Hey Again, something else to try.

Hmmmm....

There was an update prior to SP2 from Microsoft that caused all sorts or trouble with USB BSOD.
I would suggest see if this is installed, if so, uninstall it and see if the drive works without it.

Boot into Vista without the external drive attached.

Go to your Control Panel
In your "Programs & Features", select the "View Installed Updates" option, and look through the list for "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB973879)".
If is listed there, right click on it and select Uninstall, or select it and click on the Uninstall option at the top.

After it has uninstalled, reboot Vista... and try the drive again.

BSOD are devils to try and troubleshoot.

EDIT: Quick thought too... when you plug the drive into another computer next... look for any "autorun.inf" file... if there is one, just rename it, put a number of _________ in front. Open it with notepad, and see if there is any software being called to run automatically... this might also contribute to the BSOD.

EDIT 2:

Quick questions... What version of Vista is it ? What system do you have, desktop, laptop ?

See Tone Franklin's reply at http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/26925/:
OK, well as this has apparently been unsolved for quite some while (I hope you got your machine back up and running without having to resort to a shop), here's what I've found out.

Partmgr.sys controls the Page File, which, if the PF's become corrupted, will prevent Windows from working (even loading in some cases).

If you're fortunate enough to have access to "Safe Mode" ignore the instructions for "BartPE" and go straight to Control Panel.*

What one needs is an HDD independent, bootable from CD operating system.

As no Windows OS has the facility to create one, go here: http://www.howtohaven.com/system/live-windows-rescue-cd.shtml and make one yourself. Do follow the instructions and install XPE, as this holds the key to accessing "Control Panel/System".

Once - Oh! I just realised, you may not be able to access t'Internet to read this, nor be able to create a CD OS either. I hope you've got a friend who can.

OK, Once you've booted up into "BartPE" (with XPE), go to (Explorer) *Control Panel, then System, then the Advanced tab, then "Performance" button (Settings), then the "Advanced" tab and hit the Change (Virtual Memory) button.

Once in the Virtual Memory tab, you will probably see that the page File size is Zero Mb. This is your problem.

Anyone who's savvy will have created a separate partition on which to run the Page File all on it's own, otherwise, by default, it's in either the root C: or (occassionally) in C:Windows folder. Location is somewhat irrelevent at this time, though handy to know & the Page File is best placed on your fastest HDD in a separate partition (if you can manage that).

So: Highlight your fastest HDD, put a dot in the bit that says: "System managed size," press the button that says "Set" and then OK.

This may be followed by a warning box that says there's already a file called "Pagefile.sys" in this location, would you like to replace/overwrite it? Yes/OK is the correct answer.

Exit all tabs and reboot.

This might be the cause of your problems, but I can't say for sure.

@Yotch- ya thanks I think I'll update it to SP2 again. I did it sometime ago but uninstalled it coz my pc was running hecticly slow.
@Kilobits- I checked I don't have that update installed so its cool.Regarding the autorun.inf file,there isn't one in the new drives folder.I have a samsung R510 laptop core2duo @ 2ghz with 2gb of RAM. Win vista home premium SP1 32bit OS.
@Pada- I tried what you told me relating to the PF's but mine was set correctly anyway. Thanks though.

Thank you so much guys for all the help and advice :))

I'm going to install SP2 and see what happens.

Hey Joe505

You can also download TeamViewer if you feel up to it. This will allow someone to work on your Vista machine remotely.

With TeamViewer you can remotely control any computer as if you were sitting right in front of it - even through firewalls.
All your partner has to do is start a small application, which does not even require installation or administrative rights.

Install it, Private Message me your Session ID and the Password it assigns you... I can then connect and see if I can track down your BSOD problem. It is free, secure and safe, and only allows remote connections when you run it, and provide the other person with the ID and password for your session.

Here is the link to download the TeamViewer software...

http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/index.aspx

The "For mobile use: TeamViewer Portable" is a larger download, but it is handy as it does not need to be installed.

@Yotch: Thanks for that although I only read your message now and thing is I installed SP2 and no BSOD yay, however this pc is running so slow atm its driving me crazy.

@kilobits: thanks for the info and offer bud but I think for now I'm ok coz I got rid of the BSOD so now just need to sort out this lag while use windows

Glad to hear about the BSOD fix. What was the cause ?

A slow Vista PC ?? That is not a bug, it is a feature !!

Joking, how much free space on that Vista drive ? You running an up-to-date antivirus ? Maybe schedule a scandisk and have it scan and fix any errors that all the BSOD may have caused..

Download CCleaner... http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ .. create a restore point and then run it... all has helped me in the past.

I have no idea what the issue was hey. But apparently lots of people running vista have also encountered this sort of problem so as u rightfully pointed out this is just another reason why vista sucks! I have about 12% free disk space but that should increase soon coz I am transferring a lot of video files to the ext hdd. Yes thanks for that I will run the scandisk as well as download that app. Thanks Kilobits for all the assistance, much appreciated! :)
