Hi Crew.im new to the forum.very interesting forum i must say.
ok i need some help please

i just upgraded my pc which was running on Windows XP proffesional to Vista.my ADSL router is the marconi premium combo wireless router.it was woking perfect on XP but the software wouldnt load onto vista as it wasnt designd for vista.spoke to 5 telkom consultants over the phone, and all of them couldnt help, just one said it wasnt designed for Vista.is there an updated version of marconi's software for Vista?
by the way,the pc is connected to the router via a usb cable as theres no ethernet port on my pc.and whats strange is my laptop running on vista is picking up Marconi wirelessly perfectly

thanks

I'm not to sure about the usb working on vista, there been a few problems with compatibility in the past with the usb modems, not a 100% about the routers.

Ethernet would work perfectly fine, but as you stated you don't have a ethernet port on your laptop, so that's out... but wireless would work if that's your last choice.

The SSID you should be picking up is 'Marconi' and the encryption key is underneath the router if you cannot access the router to change or check it.

I have the same modem but it's connected via Wireless.

But to do that, I had to connect to the router via a lan cable to setup the basic stuff like Wireless SSID with password and IP address etc.

Doing that was pretty stupid because when it looses connection, it reasks for the password and then I had to goto my other PC to connect to the router and get it.

If I was you Makeel, buy a LAN card (R100 ±) and connect to it via that... makes life so much easier.

Going wireless or USB just makes things very VERY difficult.

I went wireless to get rid of a cable but everytime i lose connection, I kick myself.
Cause, copying the code to a .txt file on my USB has made life easier lol :)

I wouldn't use the USB if I were you.

It would be much easier if you could use a LAN cable... Then you wouldn't need any of Telkom's foul software on your machine.

Surely you can buy a PCI ethernet card? They're cheap these days.

Seconded.

Ethernet works much better than USB anyway.

You don't need fancy drivers for Ethernet - just setup a PPPoE connection on Vista (if the router doesn't manage the connection) or setup the router to manage the connection instead - and the rest is plain sailing.
