Hi,

I'm helping out a friend set up a Wireless Hospot for his restaurant for his patrons. We haven't bought any equipment yet but the line has been activated, etc

My friend would like to be able to:
1. Force the patrons to 'Like' the restaurant on Facebook the first time they try to connect via the hotspot.
2. Force the patrons to enter their basic details (email addresses, etc) when they access the hotspot.

This is obviously for marketing purposes to drive more customers to the restaurant and get customers to come back.

The questions I have are:
1. Is there an SA wifi-hotspot solution that enables us to have this functionality?
2. If there is, will it work on the Netgear DGN2200 router if it's available?

I've found a solution that does this, but it's in the States and only works on a set number of routers, most of which are not available here. I'm trying to avoid importing one of their routers with specific firmware (even though it's quite cheap) for support reasons etc; a local solution would be better.

Please advise, thanks.

What is this restaurant's name? I will gladly never visit them if they want to force me to like them or wanting to spam my e-mail.

Don't be a dumbass, just don't use the hostpot then.

I can't believe people are willing to go without good food just because the restaurant wants to build up a newsletter/social media contact list

+1

sounds like your quintessential timex watch in a digital age.

And on the OP.. you need a gateway (between your Wireless router and the internet ) to do this or proxy / VPN the entire connection over someone's gateway who does this.

PS. You dont build up social media contact lists by forcing people to do things. Its counter intuitive.

Some advice for your friend: forcing people to LIKE their page, and forcing them to divulge details is not going to go down well. If anything, you'll probably achieve the opposite effect. Also remember that not everybody has an email address, or is on Facebook, or wants to be on Facebook.

Rather make it voluntary, and encourage people to give up this info. Throw in an extra free something to those who do. Those interested will gladly oblige, and those who don't won't feel offended. Marketing is far more effective by word of mouth. Treat your customers like gold, and they will do the marketing for you. Treat them like crap, and they will spread the wrong word about you.

Those who are deligted by your service and food, might even take it upon themselves to register on Facebook and/or LIKE the restaurant's page.

Take it / leave it - your friend's choice.

@OGroteKoning... I appreciate your feedback. Perhaps I used the wrong words, but it's worth considering that the Wi-Fi will be free and unlimited to the patrons, with no minimum drinks or food orders from the patrons. 1 Like in the first visit for free internet in a country where bandwidth is not cheap is worth it in my opinion.

With regards to the spam you're referring to, this will purely be used to keep patrons up to date with Specials and any other activities that will be happening at the restaurant from time to time and patrons will be able to opt-out should they not be interested in these.
