Hi there,

I have set up a wireless connection via my home router with my PC and MSI Wind Netbook. PC has windows 7, netbook has XP Home.

I have set both connections to automatically-configure their IPs.

I can access the files shared on my XP netbook from my windows 7 PC but when I try access my Windows 7 PC via IP or via computer name from my XP netbook I get the error:

"computername is not accessible, You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator..."

Both PC's are using the same workgroup and have all firewalls disabled with no anti-virus software installed.

Please help!

haha... another Win7 / XP networking thread.

Good luck with that. Getting the two to talk is like getting a snake and mongoose to make love.

i would format my netbook with win 7 but i don't have an optical drive for it :(

I only have a 4GB one :( and my version of win 7 is too large to fit on it

you can even copy the Windows 7 setup files to the hard drive and install it from there.

will google it later, thanks for the help guys.

You have done all the networking stuff in windows 7, like removing password and what not?

I had my netbook windows xp and home pc windows 7 connecting wireless with ease.

Does you XP machine and Windows 7 machine have the same username? I had trouble connecting my Win7 machine and had to create a different user; otherwise it tries to use the local password to open the remote rerource.

I am too lazy to read the threads above so i will just post instructions and if it is explained i appologise in advance. on the windows 7 machine right click the network icon next to your clock on the taskbar. Select open network and sharing center. Click change advanced sharing settings on the top left.

under home or work:
select turn on network discovery
select turn on file and printer sharing
select turn on sharing so anyone...public folders
select 40 or 56 bit encryption (not too sure if xp support 128 bit)
select turn off password protedted sharing
select allow windows to manage homegroup connections.
leave everything as is for public networks and select save settings.

now when you share a folder you have to set permission for everyone so right click the folder you wish to share and select properties then security and then edit permissions.
select add and type in the search box "everyone"
now make sure once everyone is added that the Full control option is ticked.
Apply the settings and wham you should be A for away. If not then pm me and i will try help further.

For interest sake you need to select home network as your network for this to work so if you don't see the word HOME NETWORK written next to your little house in the middle of the Network and Sharing centre screen then click the blue text that IS there and select home network.
