Hi ,

I was wondering if I could ask for some assistance from this forum, as I am having a bit of a time of it, getting some decent information. I will be travelling to south Africa in the next few weeks and will be wanting to have mobile internet access during my stay and will constantly on the move. I will be bringing my Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop with me. Any advice on the best produc or company would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks and cheers...

IMO best to use pre-paid HSDPA from either [searchforum]Vodacom[/searchforum] or [searchforum]MTN[/searchforum], you can either buy an HSDPA modem - not sure if the networks in Australia sell them unlocked - safest might be to buy one in South Africa, or hire one for the duration of your stay, and buy a pre-paid SIM card along with pre-paid recharge credit voucher, there are a few activation steps after that, but we can help you get it going when you have it.

PS: Welcome to MyBroadband :).

many thanks for that.!! greatly aprpeciated,

Am I able to obtain everything I need at the airport when I arrive..? ( I assume that Vodacom & MTN would have shops at the airport, JHB)

You could also use HOTspots, to see where they may be available check mweb.co.za under wifi. You can buy the minutes as required and login at any hotspot.

thanks for that..I will check it out...:)

I know there are retail cellular shops at the airport, but I don't know what they have there, I imagine they probably do hire out & sell HSDPA modems at those airport shops.

I should also mention that HSDPA in South Africa is still the 1.8Mbits/s variant - throughput will be less than 1.8Mbits/s, although coverage in Johannesburg should be very good from both MTN and Vodacom, both of which have '3G' HSDPA coverage maps:
http://www.vodamap.net/3g/
http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=11789 - maybe someone else knows the exact link - took me 5 minutes of link clicking to get no further than that link :( <added>just realised it probably isn't working properly in Firefox, might be best to try Internet Exploder on that link</added>

If you coming after the July and mid - August months then the worst of our winter months are basically over. MTN & Vodacom the only two reliable major telecommication network service providers in South Africa atm.;)

I think it's best to compare coverage in the areas where you need coverage.

How much data will you need to transfer in say 30 days? [pre-paid data bundles from both Vodacom and MTN are valid for 30 days] A 2048MB [searchforum]PPDB[/searchforum] from Vodacom currently costs ZAR389.00, 1024MB costs ZAR289.00 and 500MB costs ZAR189.00, I don't know MTN's current PPDB prices - I'm sure someone will post them.
