i have join iBurst when they have started and I did experiece all their growing pains.

A few months ago I signed up for their Mcafee security suite, and yesterday I see that the last update of the software happened on the 9th of February 2007. Since then there as no updates at all.

I have contacted the helpdesk since 12H00 yesterday reporting the error indicating the following message:

Server object error 'ASP 0178 : 80070005'
Server.CreateObject Access Error
/DR/enu/VS40/Agent/SSI/EntitlementChk.asp, line 75
The call to Server.CreateObject failed while checking permissions. Access is denied to this object.

I did received am e-mail from them as follows:

"With regards to your request, I have escalated the request to the Advanced Technical Department and they will process your request shortly."
This message was send at 16H52.

Since then I have not received any phone call or e-mail from iBurst.

At 00H20 I phone the helpdesk again to find out what is happening, just to be informed that it will take up to 48 hours to sort the problem out.

I pay for the service and support and for what.

I do not use iBurst for pleasure, BUT FOR BUSINESS.

Are we going back to the the old support system???

The support staff not helping you is definately one issue, but the bigger issue is you putting your trust in Mcafee.

I've worked as a Tech for a "less than loved" organization for some time now and trust me when I tell you the only thing Norton and Mcafee protect you from is your wallet.

Save yourself trouble, and system resources and switch to something decent like Avast's (www.avast.com) free home edition. Bitdefender free is good too but lacks active scan while Avast has every goodie you need to survive.

What made you opt for the overpriced ISP virus protection? What are the benefits?

Do you have a dedicated firewall in place to protect your network?

That I would recommend, and also AVG Free.

There are quite a few excellent Linux firewall distros floating around which you can use without paying an arm and a leg, and which can also filter out pr0n and virus-infected downloads. You'll need a dedicated PC for this though.

I have bought the Packard Bell iXtreme 5825 Desktop PC which is a very nice machine, but my only problem was that it come with Windows XP Home installed. I have wiped all the software on it and install Window XP Pro, so I hope that the Windows Firewall is good enough.

Back to the topic of McAfee Small business, it consist of it's own firewall and Anti-virus, so I thought that seeing that iBurst asked R12.00 per month, it will do the trick. After my installation of Windows XP Pro and updating the software, I have used up all my 3Gig and is now in cap mode. After mentioning that to iBurst, they told me that this is the reason that I will not be able to update my McAfee software, which make me think that this is a peace of crap. I have downloaded AVG, installed and even in cap mode, it still uptade the software everytime that I log on. I did used Norton before but it make my machine very slow, so I have scrapped that one as well. So at the moment I think I will stick to AVG.

Seeing that McAfee does not want to update while I am in cap mode, which will leave my PC unprotected untill the next month, does not help me at all. I think the best is to cancel it at iBurst. I am also looking into Avast, it's just a matter of finding out which one is the best.

Yea, cancel McAfee @ iBurst, and stick to AVG Free. I'm using it on several PC's with great success.

Windows Firewall is a bit of an uh-huh as you don't have full control over what's going in and out on your iBurst account. You can use either Zonealarm, or Sygate (the Pro version) to give you more control over what is going in and out, other people will be able to assist you here.

If you really are serious about things, and looking at blocking certain sites (eg WindowsUpdates), then an dedicated firewall would be your best bet.

Are you using Windows XP Pro to share the connection between the other PC's in your business, am I correct to assume this? If so, does the WinXP PC uses two NIC's to physically separate the iBurst modem from your internal network?

If you're using one PC only, then you won't need a dedicated firewall in most cases, as you will be able to monitor (and control) your Internet usage with Sygate and a freeware bandwidth usage application.

iBurst also give you the ability to monitor the bandwidth used closely, it is available on their own website.

3Gig used just to update an antivirus package sounds extremely steep to me - more often it was also WindowsUpdates which sucked a few updates up which added to the bandwidth used as well.

hi Shaun Welcome back.

Firstly I would like to apologize for fight with the Helpdesk personel for the slow responce. According to me it seen that there is no Advanced Technical support during the night. I was under the impression that where is at least 1 Advanced Technical staff member on duty, but it seems that it is not so. At least now I know that if I report a problem that need the attention of the Advanced Technical staff, I have to wait until the nest day.

Well with McAfee, Lebo gave me a new link to log on and try to download the software. Seeing that I have install a new Desktop, and due to the fact that I had to update all the software that I have installed on it, and my normal usage, I did used up all of my 3 gig for the month. Normally 3 gig carry me through the month and it's fine. It just happen this month with the new installation of the hardware, that I went over. At least now that this has happen, I discovered this problem with McAfee. If I did not go over my 3 gig, I would have never discovered it. I've seen on the 20th of the month, after I was capped already on the 9th, that my last update of McAfee was on the 9th of the month. By trying to update the software manually, I discovered that access has been denied, and I can't update at all. I have un-installed McAfee, but now that I try to re-download the software, I cannot do so and I don't know why. I have download AVG in cap mode, installed it and update it with no problem and it still update everytime that I log on if there is a new update.

As I have mention McAfee does start to install the pack but only up to a point and then it return an error message that it can't retrieve the .Dat cab file and stop installing the rest of the software.

Eset Nod32 has a new firewall, anti virus and anti spyware package that will anihilate all the competition.

With its speed and records set with regard to the detection rate over its lifepan Nod32 is definitely my favourite.

The pricing is reasonable too.

AVG on the other hand does not find or remove everything like it should do and you are left pretty unprotected, from my experience.

Norton's had improved in speed but is still slow, the new version will fail to install correctly and use 100% proceesing on every one out of 5 pc's. It does however remove viruses better than any other package. It does not detect the website related virues like nod32 does.

MacAfee I cannot comment on.

Trend seems ok but doesn't remove some viruses correctly, and without the spyware option your pc can be infested easily with many virus-like spyware apps.

Thats my 50c

Norton remove viruses better than any other package?

Hardly lad.

I worked as a tech for sometime at a (very very large) computer store where ALL MACHINES are sold with Nortons pre-installed.

We got back more than half of them for serious virus infections and our first step was immediately to advise removal of nortons FOR ANY other package.

I agree with both Basjohn & seburn on Norton AV, the corporate editions I've found to be effective, however the pre-installed home editions is a waist of time and money.

I can second this whole post. Norton/Mcaffee is not worth it. I've been using Avast for years and it's been proven quite effective.

What do you expect of a Helpdesk?

Vodacom must have the most useless Helpdesk in the world.
Vodacom has a significant share in iBurst...

Need I say more?

Antonf, Vodacom may have shares in iBurst but the iBurst helpdesk was useless long before vodacom came along.

Morning All

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to browse to an Active Server Page (ASP) database results page created in Microsoft FrontPage, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Server object error 'ASP 0178 : 80070005'
Server.CreateObject Access Error
/_fpclass/fpdbrgn1.inc, line 99
The call to Server.CreateObject failed while checking permissions. Access is denied to this object.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if incorrect NTFS permissions are defined for your "%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\System" folder.

RESOLUTION
To resolve your issue, reset the NTFS permissions on the "%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\System" folder. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open Windows Explorer. To do this, right-click Start and then click Explore on the shortcut menu.

2. In Folders view, expand the "%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\System" folder.

3. Right-click the folder and click Properties on the shortcut menu.

4. Click the Security tab.

5. Add Everyone to the existing permissions, give at least Read permissions to Everyone, and apply these new settings to all files and subfolders.

6. Click OK.

Cheers
