Here comes Neotel

I never thought the day would arrive. Last week I placed my first phone call using Neotel, the company licensed (after years of political and legal wrangling) to provide fixed-line services in competition with Telkom. Better late than never.

Do you guys think the writer actually believes this?

10GB, generous?
R600

Agh thus far all I've read with regard to this launch is the same bundled :rolleyes:press releases with the different authors.

EDIT: He made his first call on Neotel, but couldn't upload his blog at the same time

In the Neotel section there is a thread started by RPM saying that the R600 includes the device cost of R80 x 24 (contract obviously).

So if take off the device cost, assuming we pay for it upfront, then we are down to R520 for 10 GB. But now this still includes the 1000 "free" minutes. We can only speculate how much they are charging for that 1000 "free" minutes. They would want to compete with Telkom's Closer on this one, so I don't think more than R100.

Then maybe R400 odd is a safe estimate on what we will get charged for a data only service of 10 GB. That wouldn't be too bad I think - a good start, with lower prices to come when Seacom kicks in.

Neotel

Neotel will mean nothing to South Africa if they do not reach the country
( rural ) areas, having a monopoly in the cities and not elswhere is like having christmas wrapping with out the present.
So what's the hype all about with neotel?

You beat me to it. This was the first thing that I thought of while reading it!

I want to become a tech journalist now. All you have to do is cut and paste the companies press releases and add a paragraph or two of nonsense to it.

Except that those 1000 "free" minutes are for on-network calls, i.e. NeeTel<-->NeeTel, and apart from cross-subsidising all the new fibre etc, those calls effectively don't cost NeeTel anything whatsoever. The same applies to the 50 "free" on-network SMSes.

If the photos are to be believed, the various journalists writing these articles have the actual product, and aren't just copying a press release.

So, there is one of two possibilities:

1. All journalists (including rpm) are idiots.
2. Those who have actually used the product seem reasonably happy with it.

I'm not discounting the first possibility, but perhaps the various armchair critics should wait until they've actually tried it before making judgement calls.

Cant make any calls (let alone judgement ones) until they deem our fair city worthy. :o

Lol didn't graham bell do this as well

:p
Something tells me neotel are a little late on those bragging rights... but seriously Neotel, I want to support you... just give us what we want and you will get thousands of customers overnight.

How I'd dearly love to....
But seriously, I won't be using them to make phone calls, I already have a mobile phone and inclusive minutes. I have no need for an additional phone.

Look at Maroc Telecom Morocco has slashed their ADSL prices, certainly the fastest and cheapest in Africa (Special From March 03 2008 to May 31, 2008), uncapped too

128Kb/s = R105/month
256Kb/s = R138/month
512Kb/s = R159/month
1Mb/s = R213/month
2Mb/s = R320/month
4Mb/s = R640/month
8Mb/s = R853/month
20Mb/s = R960/month

Doesn't Neotel have access to SAT3 now? What's with the 10GB?

No contract: I'll switch over.

Contract: -1 potential customer.

Coverage, Coverage, Coverage, where is the COVERAGE! why don't we see any coverage maps or anything of that sort yet, is my area covered or not, and when will it be. all the hype about neotel, but we don't even know if we could get them

Seriously, people. Shut up. You guys are bitching and moaning like nothing is good enough for you now. When you've been stuck in the dark for years, a little light at the end of a tunnel will go a long way to one day becoming a fully lit sunshine day.

For R599 pm you get [email protected] Mbps (and WIRELESS/MOBILE to boot), MODEM, PHONE, "LINE RENTAL" and the whole shebang! Which is miles cheaper (read: so much freaking better) than anything you can get from anyone else at present!

And it's Neotel's first offering. Not their second, tenth or twentieth product, but their opening salvo in what will be a long battle.

Seriously, people. Stop whining!

The landscape is changing. Now the ball is in everyone elses court. The competition will have to move and adapt. And when that happens, Neotel will have to do the same again. And so on. Hence it's called "competition", you f'in muppets!

Wait and see before you jump to conclusions.

When you play poker you don't show your hand in the first round of betting, now do ya! Improvements will come step by step, and as far as the first step goes, this is bloody brilliant! Imagine what will happen when Neotel gets SEACOM bandwidth next year this time around.

Good times I say, you pessimists!
