The government will never send in the army so that point is moot. Not when elections are so close - they did not send the army to that area near Giyani when the rioters were burning a school a day. This is minor in comparison.

It was communicated yesterday during the meeting with all parties that the Municipality will ask for the army to be sent.

Maybe it was more for a show of determination for the protesters becausue they are insisting the rioting will continue until the leaders are released.

At this rate things are going, there will be more kids not getting a proper education.

Which will cause big problems for the future of this country should these kids want to get a job etc.

So far the Govt is doing a stellar job of failing all of its mandates - education of its people, safety of its people etc etc etc.

. WATCH: Zwelihle protests 'no longer about land issue'

Cape Town - The situation in Zwelihle in Hermanus remains tense after protesters demanded the release of their leaders while burning tyres and barricading roads. Police fired tear gas to disperse crowds that stoned them. The violent protests continued from last week when people went on the rampage, damaging property and infrastructure.

Ward councillor Lindile Ntsabo said the protest is no longer about “the land issue”; the protesters are now demanding the release of Gcobani Ndzongana and the other 19 fellow community members who were arrested during an initial protest.

“The land issue was settled on the 27th of March by the Department of Human Settlement, and everyone seemed to be happy,” said Ntsabo.

“On Friday, Premier Helen Zille attempted to address the angry residents of Zwelihle about the escalating violence in the area. The residents did not allow her to say a word and instead of engaging her on their grievances threw stones she was forced to abandon her attempts and left.”

A crowd formed tonight and tried to get down Swartdam Road to block the R43. The police are in no mood to muck about now and were straight in with rubber bullets and tear gas.

The 'leader' they want to free is up in court on Thursday in Caledon. The deal is that no one is allowed to go to work until he is released which they think is Thursday. So people are being forced to stay at home and cannot leave for more than an hour or two to go food shopping only. Lots of houses have been burnt down so far so people are now to scared to leave.

Food has been a problem. Lots of people I know have been sending some money by EFT to their workers etc who cannot get out to work and need food for them and their kids. It's a complete nightmare for them. But the minority are the thugs with the violent methods and people are too scared and fragmented to stand up to them.

Has there been much international media coverage on this? A town held hostage you'd think would get more attention with Obama being in SA and all. Or are we just geo-politically not that important?

Not that I have noticed.

It's one suburb that's under siege, not the whole area. But they are the working class so it affects the whole town.

I'm in the UK just now and if it wasn't happening in my town, I wouldn't know it was happening at all. Haven't seen or heard a thing about any of it over here.

Oh, and I didn't know Obama was in SA either. Nothing on the news about it here that I've seen and I watch the news often.
