Hernia Repair Operation

Hey guys,

Has anyone had a hernia repair recently who can tell me roughly how much the whole thing cost? I don't have a medical aid so I'll be paying cash money, and I'd like some idea of what I'm looking at here :erm:

You will need to speak to a specialist as they will tell you if they are going to operate in private or State hospital.

Many people claim to have repaired their hernias without surgery so this might be something worth investigating further ...

I had a hernia op a few years ago. I was unemployed and went to a provincial hospital Victoria in Cape Town incl the OP, Anethetist, 3 day stay total cost R59.00 yes under R60.

I will advise if you in CPT go that route Victoria Hosp is very good and only a few steps below private hospital.

This is from 2 years ago for a hiatus hernia

Private hospital -medical aid paid 10k,SO paid 4k
2 endoscopy's - 2k
So if you're going to a private hospital, you'd probably need upward of 16k

You must take into consideration: the surgeon's pay, the anaethetist, theatre time, the ward bed... I wouldn't budget less than 20k. It's quite risky and 'if' something happens and you end up in ICU for 1 week you're going to have to sell your car...
Why not consider the state hospital route?

If you need more specific numbers talk to the surgeon who's going to do the operation.

I think Victoria is more than a few steps below private hospital, although I do agree its one of the better public hospitals. A patient I treated, from Limpopo, unexpectedly had to be admitted at Victoria while on holiday in the Cape. He couldn't stop praising the hospital and it's doctors.
