Herotel hits 250,000 fixed broadband connections

Herotel has announced that it reached a significant milestone, connecting over 250,000 homes and businesses across South Africa with fixed broadband.

A substantial proportion of these customers are connected to Herotel's fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network.

I recently lived in a very remote region of the Eastern Cape where fibre wasn't an option. So the choice was between fixed wireless (2 providers, one of which was Herotel) and fixed LTE. MTN Fixed LTE was faster and cheaper but less reliable as the towers would sometimes go down with loadshedding. So fixed wireless was required as a backup.

I called Herotel numerous times to try and arrange a fixed wireless installation (a previous tenant had used them but removed the equipment). They were unprofessional, blue ticked me on WhatsApp & never called me back. Apparently they weren't interested in my business. This was an apparently classic case of Herotel buying a pre-existing wireless ISP in a small town and service then taking a nose dive.

On the other hand I got excellent & reliable service from Snowvalley (a local fixed wireless ISP), I can highly recommend them. I wouldn't go near Herotel again.

I have not met a single Herotel client who is happy.

They are dog expensive and extortionist pricing.

All the small towns are being held hostage by these guys.

I hope Fixed LTE takes off to provide the much needed competition.
