Hetzner attacked by Hackers

Been hosting with them for years... 5+... only had 1 serious issue up till now! So you've done your homework... who do you suggest as an alternative...

don't be lazy, do your homework - your post is inaccurate to say the least - use google and or bing even aardvark and check your statement and competitors that have truly maintained 99.9% uptime in the last 5 years...

we have 10 managed servers with them (which I think gives me some clout on the matter) and I can say that we are "addicted" to their "speedy and 24/7 support". Yes, sometimes there are niggles or special requirements (that can't be met in a managed environment) but it is not enough to risk going elsewhere.

which I think gives me some clout on the matter - and who else do you host with that has no "niggles"?

Dude, you going around in circles... acting like a know-all-it... fact... I have hosted with them for over 5 years... fact... I have had 1 serious issue with them in all that time... I certainly didn't say they are perfect, yes I have had other minor niggles and I have hosted elsewhere previously WA, GamCo and overseas... if you know so much, then who do you advice as a decent local host?

Blame Hertzner if:

1. They have suffered the worse number of hacking

2. They have the highest number of downturn

3. They are the most priced provider

4. etc

My point is any provider will be found to be a culprit in one or more of the points above. Feel free to challenge me if any provider has been clean of any of these points over the past 5 years...

@VioAdmin. I know for a fact they have a few of the best admins around who have been in the ISP business since the mid to late 90s and are contributors to FreeBSD and other platforms. I've dealt with them often (admittedly a while ago) but they have always been very professional and straight.
I wonder if this hack attack also effected their German operations?

Time has come for a new Internet ... the current one is broken byond repair.

While I would love to lambaste Hetzner based on some recent dismal failures to fail-over properly, I find myself commending Hetzner for the way in which Hetzner has handled this breach - as posted by TimTDP.

Hetzner took a bold step in not denying what happened, I think most other companies would try to deny a breach of security as serious as this one was.

There is one thing that concerns me though, and it is the following statement:
Great that it is a team effort, but maybe Hetzner's team is just not good enough and it is time for Hetzner to take some of the exorbitant amounts of cash it gets from customers, and invest that in the salaries of more experienced IT staff - I'm sure the existing employees are ok, but they don't appear to be nearly as good as they need to be. Sorry Hetzner for the harsh criticism, but I think you should consider my suggestion carefully, and no I don't want that job - I have enough stress in my life.

I am sure these guys are very good at what they do, but perhaps they are not GOOD enough. For a huge host like them to admit that they do NOT know how the hackers got in is quite insane. So basically they are saying, "Someone broke into my house and stole some stuff, but I have no idea how they got in the house." I would leave them asap but as people have pointed out(those that REQUIRE local hosting) -- not many other places to go.

I still cannot fathom those prices, R3,000+ for 30gig bw. Wow, this company is really really ripping people off and getting rich.

Getting it wrong

During a recent move, I did some research. We need a local server for it's speed, so the international option just doesn't cut it for us.

First, the cost of local bandwidth (for managed dedicated servers) ranges from 2.5 cents (Hetzner) to 14 cents (other ISPs) per meg. For Hetzner, this equates to R25 a gig or R750 for 30 gigs (NOT R3000 as quoted by VioAdmin in this thread).

Second, we used to host with ThePlanet in the U.S. but we got a better, faster server for about R1000 per month less at Hetzner because we weren't using the ridiculous amounts of bandwidth given by overseas ISPs. At the moment we only use about 15 gigs per month.

Third, we are not subject to fluctuating exchange rates and we can claim the VAT back from SARS - which only helps to reduce the cost further.

With that being said, I must confess that when we were hosting with ThePlanet, there was not one security issue of this magnitude in 3 years (that I am aware of).

Ive got servers at the Planet, and recently ESET came under a ddos attack. Our servers were behind the same routers their servers were so for about 2 hours we had some limited connectivity to our servers. However, they put a really fancy router in that stopped the attacks and life went on as usual. I was pretty impressed by the way the dealt with a military grade attack.

Ive being with The Planet now ... close on 6 years and have never had a breach.

w1z4rd: Each of our servers had it's own hardware firewall from day 1 ... and we never had an issue. Perhaps this is something Hetzner and the other local hosts should consider offering as an optional extra?
