Feedback from Hetzner about the downtime this morning:

Start Date: 2010-08-02 07:00:00 SAST

Resolved Date: 2010-08-02 09:25:00 SAST

Point of impact: CPT & JNB

Symptoms experienced: Customers with hosting services in South Africa would have experienced problems resolving to all hosting services.

Cause of problem: See Additional information

Estimated time of repair: N/a

Additional information: The Authoritative DNS services in South Africa began to experience problems with resolution earlier this morning. This affected all internet services reliant on domain name resolution including websites, email and konsoleH.

An automated software update intended for all customer servers was erroneously applied to the Hetzner DNS servers which resulted in the authoritative DNS service being blocked.

Following this incident our DNS infrastructure is being isolated from automated updates to prevent the possibility of similar incidents in future.

We apologise for any inconvenience and wish to assure you that we are making ongoing efforts to improve our services for the benefit of all customers.

Thanks for the update. I wish ISP's were as upfront about SNAFUs...

Maybe we should hard code MyBB's IP address so we can ensure access during downtimes (a bit like like some users do with Google, Facebook, etc...) Oops, that doesn't work, seems its a 'virtual' server address. Pity...
