Hi, I would like to know the differences between following modems

Hi all

I would like to know the difference between

Vodafone K3565, K3520 & K3715

I went to a shop and it had K3565 & K3520

K3520 was about R1500 & K3565 was R1200

I asked them what is the difference

they said K3520 supports HSDPA 7.2 while K3565 only supports up to HSDPA 3.6

Is it true? and what is K3715?

I am planning to purchase K3520, is it a right buy?

Please answer me

1. Vodafone K3565 (Huawei E160) - This does NOT do HSUPA, so uploads speeds of 384kbps only. Also only 3.6mbps downloads speeds.

2. Vodafone K3520 (Huawei E169) - This does NOT do HSUPA, so uploads speeds of 384kbps only. It does however do HSDPA of 7.2mbps download speeds.

3. Vodafone K3715 (Huawei E180) - This does HSUPA (1400kbps uploads) and 7.2mbps downloads.

[Someone correct me if I'm wrong with these. First time I've heard of the K3565 being sold in SA, had to do some research to find out more info.]

Option 3 will probably be your best bet, as it supports the faster upload speeds, which are free now. But if upload speeds are not that important to you, then option 2 is good enough, as it supports 7.2mbps download speeds, which will be the standard soon, but you'll need to pay R49 extra per month to get those faster download speeds. Option 1 looks like the cheapest and entry level 3G modem.

If your connection is not very stable or you have low coverage, then you might need to purchase an external antenna from Poynting - http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/

Now they have tested the ADPT-025 on both the Novatel MC950D and the Huawei E172 USB sticks - see here http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/Prod...uctid=ADPT-025

I'm not sure if this adapter will work on the Vodafone K3715 (Huawei E180) or other USB sticks. I'm not sure if the Poynting techies have tested this yet, but I don't see why it shouldn't work.

There is a Huawei E181 which apparently has the connection for the external antenna ala Huawei E270/E272.

Do these new stick modems come with a split USB cable so you can supply extra power to the device like the E220/E272 does?

I get the (possibly misguided) impression that the stick modems are just not as good as the E220/E272. Comments from people using them?

I installed two E180's for two poms visiting yesterday and they did not come with the split cables. Wonder if they have better power management in them.

I thought the E180 can do UPA up to 5.7 but not 100% sure.

People have reported issues with some of the sticks, which is why I thought I'd ask. Would actually be an interesting test if you could find a machine that you know needs the split cable for a E220/272 to test a stick modem on it.

This news obviously comes way too late to influence your decision - but for future reference, note this:

The Vodafone K3565 (Huawei E160) and the Vodafone K3565-Z (ZTE) are almost identical modems, but the current Huawei E160 and E160G and E160x range of modems are entirely different from the previous Huawei E160 modems.

It seems that the biggest differences - aside from looks - are these:

a) 3 x LED indicators on the outer edge of the CURRENT Huawei modems (1 x centralised embedded LED on the old Huawei and the ZTE modems)

b) ZTE devices do not (yet) work with MDMA (For more on MDMA, see http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/announcement.php?f=103 and/or www.nerve.org.za/mdma)

c) ZTE devices do not work on a D100 router (http://gadgeteer.org.uk/2008/10/13/d100-router-tech-specs/)

I went to loch logan waterfront yesterday to get a 3g router as i have 2 laptops that need to connect and neither support the older pcmcia 3g cards that i have, turns out the routers which support them is also discontinued, and none of the vodacom shops have routers in stock... so i ended up at incredible corruption who has many routers in stock and have a deal where u get a "dovado router", "K3565" and sim card/connection free, on 24 month contract. figured thats pretty much what i would need so went with the deal.

turns out when i get home, the router they supply (ITS A BUNDLE) does NOT support the K3565, but does support the K3520. Now i';m sitting 200km from them and all they can say is "oh sorry we will swop it for you"

Does nobody bother to test a combo work together?? dunno if its vodacom or incredibly useless who is to blame but surely its step one in advertising a combo. anyway so now they have to courier the modem this way and the other one back to swop with the K3520. I can however say the K3565 works good when connected to laptop directly.

and yes come with split cable for extra power, although it doesnt seem to be needed to work nice (i live in middle of nowhere)

See if you can find a firmware update for your router, it might add support for the K3565.

it came with version 2.0 firmware, i upgraded it to 3.0, which then gave it support for few more but not the K3565... anyway will make a plan to get the right modem from incredibly corrupt :)
 
HI can anyone tell me if they have problems with the K3565-Z.

I've done an "upgrade" on my data contract and got the K3565 stick. Installed the software and it connects to vodacom network but I simply cannot browse. I've been to Vodacom 5 times. had the stick replaced ( eventually ) they gave me a new one and the same bloody thing. My old modem still works fine so its not my contract or the sim.
I'm using vista home.

Any help please... since vodacom doesn't seem to know what the problem is.
