I recently got the Garmin Fenix 6S Pro for R6900 (was on sale at takealot).
Not the latest, but excellent device.

for instance, Ive always wanted a smartwatch, looking to get a watch for Samsung pay and vitality,
but the prices are just bonkers, looking at a Galaxy watch active 2

better idea to buy one that is used, change the straps and keep on using it
till the battery dies.

It's a really powerful, bit mapped, wireless computer. Comparing it to a Garmin etc. is just silly.

I initially purchased an Apple Watch about 4 years ago as a means to track my workouts and upload these to Discovery.Definitely finding more and more benefits to having a smart watch though - tap to pay, very useful data related to sleep tracking, data on VO2 max, streaming music to my AirPods while running, locating my phone!
Many other benefits!

Had a Garmin fenix , now a Samsung 6 LTE .

Samsung is k@k , going back to Garmin in a year.

Battery life on the Samsung with LTE on is terrible.
When you complain on the Samsung fan boy pages , they tell you turn of sensors.
What is the point op buying the functions to turn them off
